Former UK Deputy Home Secretary Tugendhat Visits Taiwan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China announced that on the 12th, Tom Tugendhat, former Deputy Minister of the Interior of the United Kingdom, visited Taiwan. Tugendhat met with Vice President Shirley Mei-chin and delivered a closed-door keynote speech at the National Defense Academy.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China today (13th), Tom Tugendhat, along with his senior assistant Lottie Dane, visited Taiwan from the 12th to the 15th.

Member of Parliament Tugendhat has been a long-time steadfast supporter of Taiwan, having served as Deputy Minister of the Interior in the United Kingdom and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons. This visit marks his first official visit to Taiwan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomes him.

During his visit to Taiwan, Member of Parliament Tugendhat will meet with Vice President Shirley Mei-chin, former President Tsai Ing-wen, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Yuan Chang Ching-cheng, attend a banquet hosted by the Secretary-General of the National Security Council Wu Zhaoxie and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Chizhong, and deliver a closed-door keynote speech at the Institute for National Defense and Security Studies on the topic of “Taiwan: Frontline of Freedom.”

Member of Parliament Tugendhat is concerned about authoritarian expansion and human rights issues, actively defending democratic and freedom values. During his tenure as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the UK House of Commons, he actively supported Taiwan’s international participation by writing to the Director-General of the World Health Organization, the UK Minister of Health, and initiating parliamentary debates.
