In Xilinhot City, Inner Mongolia, a supermarket employee was caught stealing from the store, with 6 tons of eggs stolen in just six months, leading to long-term losses and the closure of the supermarket. The news made it to the top search on Baidu on January 2.
Several Chinese media outlets reported on the incident on January 1. In 2019, a woman named Zhao operated a 3000-square-meter supermarket in the bustling downtown area of Xilinhot City, Inner Mongolia. In January 2021, due to her husband’s illness requiring care, Zhao partnered with friends and relatives to run the supermarket. However, to her surprise, the once profitable supermarket closed down within seven months due to mismanagement. An audit report provided by Zhao revealed a loss of over 2 million yuan in assets, with more than 6 tons of eggs disappearing from the supermarket in just six months.
In August 2021, during the inventory clearance before closing, Zhao noticed discrepancies in the quantity of goods on the shelves. After checking the supermarket’s surveillance footage, she unexpectedly discovered an employee engaging in theft.
After reporting to the police, the employee confessed to stealing from the supermarket, revealing that many other employees were involved in the theft. Zhao stated that out of the 16 employees in the supermarket, not a single one was not engaged in theft. She even mentioned that after suppliers delivered goods to the supermarket, the business partners would take the goods to sell in other stores.
Zhao explained that the employees stole by not scanning items or scanning them at discounted prices during checkout. Among them, cashier Liu, aged 35, had the highest frequency and amount of theft, “She would sometimes scan a payment, send it to the cashier’s WeChat or Alipay, and then immediately transfer the money to her husband.”
Currently, 11 employees suspected of theft have faced legal sanctions, with 8 of them being sentenced.
Zhao said, “I have nearly 10,000 videos saved, and over the years, I have attended court sessions more than 70 times and collected over 60 verdicts. It feels so difficult every step forward.”
The supermarket theft case has been ongoing for four years and has not yet concluded, but Zhao stated that she will persist in recovering the losses.
Zhao lamented, “A supermarket over 3000 square meters, closing down due to theft, causing me over 2 million yuan in economic losses.”
This incident has sparked heated discussions among netizens.

User “Rufeiyanlfeirenzai” expressed, “It took such a long time. The cost of defending one’s rights is truly high.”
