Experts: Cold Weather and Cloudy Skies Expected on New Year’s Eve in Taiwan

Taiwanese meteorological experts say that the weather for the New Year’s Eve on December 31st and the daytime of January 1st next year will see a slight drop in temperature, with cold nights continuing. As Taiwan ushers in the dawn of 2025, there will be disturbances in the weather, with cloudy conditions prevailing in various areas.

Associate Professor Wu Derong of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan mentioned on “Sanli True Meteorology – Revealing Sky Secrets” that the latest (8:00 pm on the 29th) European model (ECMWF) simulation indicates that under the influence of the continental high pressure on that day, clear and stable weather will be observed throughout the regions. The cold air mass will weaken, leading to a significant increase in temperatures. However, radiative cooling at night will result in relatively low temperatures, causing a large temperature difference between day and night. The temperatures across different regions for that day will range from 12 to 24 degrees Celsius in the north, 13 to 25 degrees Celsius in the central region, 13 to 26 degrees Celsius in the south, and 13 to 26 degrees Celsius in the east.

Wu Derong further stated that according to the latest European model simulation, on New Year’s Eve (December 31st), the northeast winds will slightly strengthen, with increasing lower-level moisture on the eastern side. There will be a probability of isolated, short-term rain in the eastern half, while the western half will remain sunny and stable. Later in the evening, medium-level clouds from the south will gradually move northward, with a chance of scattered showers in mountainous areas. On January 1st next year, medium-level clouds will gradually cover the sky, and there might be brief, local showers in mountainous areas and the eastern half. The probability of scattered showers in the plains of the western half will gradually increase during the daytime. Nighttime activities on New Year’s Eve in the western plains will generally be fine, but the cloud cover may not be ideal for welcoming the first light of the year. There will be a slight drop in temperatures on New Year’s Eve and the daytime of January 1st, with cold nights continuing, so it’s advisable to stay warm during outdoor activities.

Wu Derong also noted that based on the latest simulations from various countries, another wave of cold air will move southward from January 2nd to 4th, although its intensity will not be as strong as the current one. On Thursday, medium-level clouds will continue to cover the sky, with localized rain in mountainous areas and the eastern half, and a probability of rain in the plains of the western half, leading to gradually declining temperatures. The cold air will be at its strongest on the 3rd and 4th, with only a probability of reaching the “northeast monsoon” or “continental cold air mass”. The cold air will weaken on the 5th. Model simulations are still being adjusted, so continuous monitoring is advised.
