Many Chinese people like to purchase reliable and affordable Japanese cars. In the past year, which Japanese car models have been selling well?
Generally, the best time to buy a new car is when the new version of the same model is about to be released. Dealers will try to clear out their inventory to make space for the new models. Lori Wittman, President of Cox Automotive Retail Solutions, told The Wall Street Journal that the closer you get to the release date of the new model, the more money you can save by purchasing the older model.
Therefore, it’s best to buy a car at the end of each year or after the new models are rolled out, as sellers usually offer generous discounts or promotions to quickly sell off the older cars. During this time, dealerships often have a large inventory of pre-owned cars available for sale.
Japanese cars are highly reputed globally. Brands like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda are popular among consumers. The cars produced by these manufacturers not only meet drivers’ expectations but often exceed them.
“Japanese car manufacturers are renowned for their consistent high quality and reliability, as well as seamless integration of the latest driving technology features,” said Nigel Tunnacliffe, Co-founder and CEO of Coastline Academy, to Gobankingrate. “Many Japanese brands also have excellent fuel efficiency, making them particularly appealing to today’s fuel-conscious consumers.”
Here are the top-selling Japanese cars in 2024 as compiled by Gobankingrate.
In 2023, Toyota sold 434,943 RAV4s in the U.S. This was the highest among all non-full-size pickup trucks and the best-selling SUV in America. While the RAV4 may not be the fastest, best-handling, quickest-parking, most luxurious, or most fuel-efficient model on the market, it is practical, reliable, and affordable.
Tunnacliffe noted that the Toyota RAV4 is indeed one of the best choices for drivers.
“The Toyota RAV4 is a cornerstone in the compact SUV category because it balances outstanding technology and safety features with competitive fuel efficiency,” he said.
The Honda CR-V has always been one of the most successful models in the North American market. In the first half of 2024, the sales of this SUV approached 200,000 units, once again proving its popularity among consumers.
Erin Kemp, a consumer advocate at Bumper, a car buying and selling website, explained to Gobankingrate that the CR-V offers many choices for drivers who want eco-friendly cars but are not interested in fully electric vehicles.
“This model is popular among customers because of its spacious interior, good handling, and high fuel efficiency – which attract many environmentally conscious buyers, especially the hybrid model of the car,” she said.
In June this year, U.K.-based automotive research firm JATO Dynamics compiled data and estimates from 151 markets globally, showing that the Honda CR-V sold 846,000 units in 2023, ranking third in global sales.
In the U.S., the Toyota Camry remains a top seller and has yet to be greatly impacted by electric vehicles. For over a decade, the Camry has been one of the best-selling sedans in America. The U.S. version of the Camry comes with either a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine or a 2.5-liter hybrid.
“When people think of reliability and affordability, many think of this car,” Kemp said.
The 2025 Camry model will only be available as a hybrid, offering a choice for those who prioritize environmental friendliness.
Tunnacliffe commented that besides all the premium features, the Rogue feels very luxurious.
“The interior of the Nissan Rogue is one of the best in its class, offering excellent technological features and outstanding comfort and spaciousness,” he said. “The luxurious interior style of this car, coupled with the exceptionally smooth and quiet driving experience, makes it an excellent choice for long trips.”
The Honda Civic is a masterpiece in the compact car segment, excelling in spaciousness, upscale interior, responsive handling, impressive fuel efficiency, and numerous standard features, setting it apart from its competitors.
The Honda Civic has always been a best-selling model, Tunnacliffe noted, because it has everything a driver needs. He listed several factors contributing to the popularity of this car: modern design, efficient performance, additional hybrid models, as well as reliability, affordability, and value.
The Civic is also known for its durability. Tunnacliffe added, “It boasts high manufacturing quality, ensuring that this car continues to provide lasting value throughout its entire lifespan.”
Drivers often see many Toyota Corollas on the road for a reason. In 2023, the global sales of the Corolla reached 803,000 units, ranking fourth.
Kemp mentioned that the Corolla is a very good investment because these cars typically have a lifespan of over 200,000 miles. When they do require maintenance, the costs are kept low due to the popularity of this model.
