Chinese Actress Zhao Wei Announces Divorce with Businessman Huang Youlong
Chinese actress Zhao Wei, who was suddenly labeled as a “problematic artist” by the Chinese authorities in August 2021, saw all her works removed from platforms and her Weibo account shut down overnight. It wasn’t until February this year that her Weibo was finally restored. On the 28th of December, she announced on Weibo that she had divorced the tycoon Huang Youlong.
Zhao Wei rose to fame for her role as “Xiao Yanzi” in the popular drama series “Princess Returning Pearl”, which became a hit across Chinese-speaking regions. She later transitioned to directing. In 2008, she started dating businessman Huang Youlong and they got married the same year. Their daughter “Xiao Sisi” was born in April 2010.
Reports suggest that Zhao Wei and Huang Youlong accumulated their wealth through investments. Zhao Wei has been recognized as one of the wealthiest actresses in China by Forbes.
Zhao Wei, once a top-tier actress in the entertainment industry, had all her film and TV works taken down from various platforms on August 26, 2021. Her Weibo super topic was closed, unreleased projects were recast, and she was branded as a “problematic artist” by Chinese state media. The authorities have not provided any explanation to date.
For some time afterwards, fans could only catch glimpses of Zhao Wei’s life through her Instagram account. It wasn’t until early February this year that her Weibo account was reinstated for posting. In early December, when author Qiong Yao passed away, Zhao Wei also made a rare social media post to mourn her.
Recently, rumors were circulating online about Zhao Wei planning a comeback, but her husband Huang Youlong made headlines for reportedly owing debts amounting to around 7.53 billion Hong Kong dollars. When combined with his previous debts, the total debt Huang Youlong was reported to be carrying reached 11.2 billion.
Due to Huang Youlong’s mounting debts in recent years, there were rumors circulating about the couple’s divorce. Zhao Wei has now confirmed this herself.
In a statement released today, Zhao Wei said, “I officially divorced Mr. Huang years ago. Our marriage has long been dissolved legally. Any events, comments, or news reports concerning him are not related to me. I sincerely ask everyone to acknowledge these facts and avoid dragging me into false connections or baseless reports.”
