Jordan Garner, a 25-year-old man from Sydney, Australia, is willing to go to great lengths to support and respect his family. Recently, on the birthday of his late grandfather, he embarked on a 12-hour drive to spend time with his 82-year-old grandmother.
Jordan’s grandfather, Graham Gessey, passed away in 2023. During his lifetime, he deeply loved his wife of many decades, Rosalie Gessey, who cared for him in his later years.
“He was everything to her,” Jordan told The Epoch Times, “Their relationship was very harmonious and beautiful.”
As the anniversary of Graham’s birthday approached in 2024, Jordan felt it was important to honor his late grandfather and provide some comfort to his grieving grandmother. So, he decided to surprise her by inviting her for a cup of coffee, continuing the tradition of coffee dates they used to have when Graham was alive.
Departing from Sydney, Jordan endured a challenging 12-hour drive through rain and strong winds to eventually reach the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. “It was perhaps the most difficult drive of my life, as it was raining heavily and windy,” he said.
On that day, Rosalie was immersed in sadness, unaware that her grandson was coming to see her. She even messaged him saying, “I’ll be drinking my coffee alone this morning, as no one here to share one with.”
“When I saw that message, I almost cried,” Jordan said.
Upon his arrival in Queensland, he first visited some other relatives in the area before heading straight to a coffee shop where his grandmother was planning to go. Jordan carried a bunch of flowers and a photo frame, hiding in a corner, waiting patiently.
As Rosalie entered the shop and sat down, he felt the timing was right and walked up to her, surprising her immensely.
“When she saw me, she immediately shed tears of excitement,” Jordan said. As she embraced him, he couldn’t help but shed tears as well. He described the look on his grandmother’s face as “priceless.”
“It was probably the happiest moment of my year, felt amazing,” Jordan said, “Honestly, it was the most wonderful, wonderful day.”
The two spent three hours chatting, reminiscing about their beloved gentleman (Graham). Although Graham is no longer with them, he lives on in their hearts forever.
Jordan stayed in Sunshine Coast for three days, ensuring to take Rosalie out for coffee each day.
This visit deepened Jordan’s love for his family and strengthened his determination to spread joy and serve others.
Jordan’s mother was adopted by Rosalie and her first husband, from whom she later separated. She then married the former neighbor Graham, and their happy marriage lasted for over thirty years.
“After Graham passed away, I promised at his funeral speech that I would take care of Rosalie,” Jordan said.
To uphold his promise, Jordan continues the tradition of coffee dates, taking Rosalie out whenever there is an opportunity.
Jordan has recently secured a full-time job, bringing him great joy as he used to work multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet. Currently, their family is considering having Rosalie move closer to them, allowing her more time to spend with her great-grandchild.
