Urgent: US Supreme Court to Hold TikTok Hearing on January 10th

The United States Supreme Court announced on Wednesday, December 18th, that it will hold a hearing next month on the constitutionality of the federal law “sell or ban” regarding TikTok.

Previously, TikTok argued under the U.S. Constitution’s “First Amendment” that the app should not be banned and brought the case to the Supreme Court in hopes of preventing the ban from taking effect.

According to the Associated Press, the justices will hear arguments on January 10th regarding whether this law violates the First Amendment.

In April of this year, the legislation known as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversaries Act,” passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Biden, requires TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest from TikTok by January 19, 2025, or else face a nationwide ban in the United States.

Members of Congress support this legislation to safeguard American freedom of speech from foreign adversaries and to limit the Chinese Communist Party’s ability to collect data in the United States.

It is currently unclear when the Supreme Court will make a final ruling on this matter.
