On December 15th, Xiamen University Tan Kah Kee College issued a clarification stating, “On the evening of December 11, 2024, two students at our school had a verbal altercation and physical conflict in the student campus.”
The statement also mentioned, “According to the forensic appraisal by the public security authority, the injuries of the two students involved were minor,” and clarified that the steel nail shown in the circulated images was implanted during a spine surgery five years ago. The school urged the public to “not believe rumors, not spread rumors, and work together to maintain a safe campus.”
Following the release of the clarification statement, it faced strong criticism from numerous netizens.
Some netizens expressed, “The female student was previously implanted with a steel nail due to surgery, and this time she was thrown down by someone. How did it turn into mutual violence?”. They questioned whether the school was protecting the perpetrator or safeguarding its reputation.
Others voiced, “Is it justified to be beaten because of a steel nail implanted five years ago? It’s a clear diversion of attention,” and “This can’t deny that it was bullying,” emphasizing the importance of raising awareness of bullying on campus and in society.
“Being brutally beaten and described as mutual violence, ridiculous. Shanghai lockdown was once rumored, then three days later, there was a lockdown, and they said the one who mentioned it was arrested. It’s incredible. In the past, we believed your clarifications, but now whenever we see your clarifications, it’s like predicting the future,” one netizen commented.
