UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s murder suspect, Luigi Mangione, appeared in court in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, facing extradition to New York. Mangione is facing five charges in Pennsylvania, with prosecutors in New York also accusing him of murder.
According to CNN, Mangione arrived at the courthouse yelling, with shouts of “… insulting the intelligence of the American people” ringing out. The 26-year-old suspect is currently being held in Altoona, Pennsylvania without bail. Local authorities have stated that the extradition process may take several days to weeks as investigators sift through a substantial amount of evidence to piece together his movements and determine if he acted alone.
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania court indicated that the hearing will commence at 1:30 pm Eastern Time at the Blair County Courthouse.
Thompson, aged 50, was shot outside the entrance of the Hilton Hotel at the intersection of West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan around 6:45 am on the 4th. Following the shooting, law enforcement conducted a multi-state manhunt for the perpetrator.
After a five-day widespread pursuit, the suspect was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Monday, having been on the run.
Court documents submitted online revealed that New York prosecutors have charged Mangione with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree illegal weapon possession, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree illegal weapon possession.
