On Saturday, December 7th, the investigation into the shooting death of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, by the New York City police entered its fourth day. Mayor Eric Adams stated that the net to capture the suspect is tightening.
According to the New York Post, Mayor Eric Adams hinted during a speech that the authorities may already have identified the suspect. At a holiday party held by the Police Athletic League in Harlem, when asked if the police have the name of the killer, Adams replied: “We don’t want to disclose that right now.”
“If we do that, it basically gives a message to the person we are looking for, and we don’t want to give him the upper hand. Let him continue to believe he can hide behind a ‘mask’. We have already revealed his face. We will expose who he is and bring him to justice.”
The Mayor praised the ongoing investigation’s “tri-state law enforcement partnership.” “They are tracking his footsteps to find evidence—some ways are known, some are unknown, but the net is tightening, and we will bring this person to justice,” Adams said.
UnitedHealthcare CEO Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan in the early hours of December 4th. He was preparing to attend an investor meeting at the hotel.
The police stated that the gunman fled on foot after the incident, then rode a bicycle through Central Park and eventually disappeared. Surveillance footage captured the suspect carrying a backpack before entering the park, but he was not seen with it when he exited. A large number of police officers conducted an intensive search operation inside the park and eventually found the suspect’s backpack.
It’s currently unclear how the police confirmed the suspect’s identity, but they are carefully examining hundreds of clues provided by the public. After the incident, the police released multiple photos of the suspect, including ones where he wasn’t wearing a mask.
