Indian Baby Elephant Rescued After Falling into Open Well

In Kerala, India, a young elephant accidentally fell into a well and was unable to climb out. Fortunately, authorities were alerted and managed to rescue the elephant, reuniting it with its waiting companions nearby.

The incident took place on the night of December 2nd in a village called Pinavoorkudy in Kerala, located outside the forest area of Kothamangalam, as reported by the Associated International Press.

Local residents reported that a herd of wild elephants crossed the river and entered the village, where there is a pineapple farm that the elephants couldn’t reach. As they were passing through the village, a one-year-old elephant fell into an open well at the residence of a villager named Nirmala.

Forestry officials and firefighters rushed to the scene and spent about an hour removing part of the well’s wall to create a pathway for the young elephant to climb out. Eventually, the elephant escaped from the trapped well and rejoined the herd waiting in the nearby forest area.

On another occasion two years ago, a similar incident occurred in Andhra Pradesh, India, where a baby elephant fell into a well but was rescued by emergency responders too.

This incident took place in November 2022 in a village called Gundla Palle in Andhra Pradesh. Upon receiving a report of the elephant falling into the well, forestry officials and firefighters arrived at the scene to rescue the stranded animal. The baby elephant was seen anxiously pacing back and forth in the shallow water of the well, unable to climb out.

Rescuers used an excavator to create a pathway on part of the well’s wall for the elephant to climb out safely and return to the wild. At that moment, local residents captured the heartwarming scene on their phones.
