Hello everyone, welcome to “News Perspective,” I am Li Xin.
Today’s Focus: Trump’s Phone Call with Putin: Do Not Escalate the Situation in Ukraine! Kremlin Denies; 200,000 People in Zhengzhou Night Ride to Kaifeng, National Imitation, the CCP is Panicked! “Battle at Chosin Reservoir” Exposed to “Fictitious Scenes” American Veteran: Magical Victory for U.S. Forces.
On Monday, November 11th, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, November 7th, discussing the situation in Ukraine. This was their first phone call since Trump’s election victory. However, Russia denied the call.
According to The Washington Post on the 10th, in the phone call from his residence in Florida, Trump advised Putin not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and reminded him of the significant military presence of the United States in Europe. They discussed peace goals in Europe, and Trump expressed interest in further dialogue to address the Ukraine conflict “as soon as possible.”
During the election campaign, Trump had mentioned that he would find a solution to end the conflict within “one day” of taking office, without providing specific details on the approach or a comprehensive plan to end the conflict. Sources claim that Trump privately expressed his support for an agreement allowing Russia to retain some occupied territories, and briefly raised the land issue during the phone call.
Ukrainian officials were informed of the call, and did not object to it. However, the Kremlin in Russia denied that the two leaders had spoken, calling The Washington Post report “completely inaccurate, fabricated, and entirely false.”
On Thursday, Putin publicly congratulated Trump on his victory, praised his “manly” response to the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, and stated that he is “ready” to talk to Trump.
A former U.S. official who was informed about the call suggested that Trump may not want to assume office in a situation where escalating tensions with Russia could lead to a new crisis in Ukraine, giving him motivation to prevent the worsening of the conflict.
According to sources, in September of this year, Zelensky met with Trump during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Trump told Zelensky that he would not abandon Ukraine but hoped to give diplomatic efforts a chance to resolve the situation. He said, “I guarantee you will be happy with me.”
On the Chinese side, on the night of November 8th, over 200,000 university students in Zhengzhou rode bicycles in a massive convoy to Kaifeng. Despite having no protest element, this night ride far surpassed the scale of the White Paper Movement from previous years, prompting the CCP to issue a comprehensive ban. Various measures were taken within Zhengzhou universities to prevent students from leaving campus.
This event originated in June of this year, when four female university students cycled over 50 kilometers from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng to sample the famous soup dumplings, publicizing their journey online, which sparked interest and emulation. Since then, the scale of night rides has continued to grow.
Initially, local authorities in Kaifeng welcomed the night rides by offering free entry to multiple tourist attractions at night for university students. Many students who had already arrived in Kaifeng enthusiastically visited various tourist spots, while others took buses back and occupied spaces in fast-food restaurants such as KFC and McDonald’s to rest, waiting for dawn to arrive. Some even stayed at the Qingming Riverside Park.
A graduate student from Zhengzhou University, Xiao Wang, commented, “It’s mainly unstoppable, Kaifeng is an ancient capital, and there have always been many people wanting to visit.” Admission to the Qingming Riverside Park was free until the end of December, which he believed was very appealing to university students.
When the number of participants surged to 200,000 on November 8th, authorities urgently called for a halt. The police announced the closure of the Zhengkai Expressway from November 9th to 10th. Campus entrances were also blocked off, with announcements made via loudspeakers urging students to safely and orderly return, and not to proceed further.
The massive biking convoy in Zhengzhou caused a stir online.
A white-collar worker from Zhengzhou remarked that the student cycling movement, whether intentional or not, served as a form of demonstration or protest against the suffocating atmosphere of the times and society. He described the overall campus environment as akin to a prison that constrains people’s thoughts and bodies. For students, venturing out was a means of liberation.
A social activist in Zhengzhou also noted that this event, though spontaneous, indicated that students had been under prolonged suppression and needed an outlet for their emotions.
Videos circulating online showed that participants in the student cycling movement included not only local students but also students from other cities, retired military personnel from various branches, including the Armed Police, Air Force, Army, and even the Rocket Force. Six hundred students from Beijing also traveled by high-speed rail to Zhengzhou to join the night ride on the 8th, demonstrating the significant impact and scale of the event.
Radio Free Asia reported that in Beijing, university students cycled towards Tiananmen Square but were blocked by police barricades, prompting them to cycle to Tianjin instead; tens of thousands of students from Nanjing cycled to Chao Lake in Anhui and even farther to Ma’anshan; students from Chengdu headed to Dujiangyan; Wuhan University students rode to the East Lake Lying Wave Gate; and students from Xi’an night cycled to Xianyang.
This phenomenon resembles a “new wave of student activism alliance” or collective performance art among the new generation, with the fervor and passion of youth needing an outlet. While it may be considered a normal activity combining fitness and tourism, it has left the CCP feeling uneasy. Regardless of any political intentions or slogans, the rapid mobilization and unified action of young people, together with the gathering of 200,000 individuals emitting a strong sense of unity, have made the CCP tremble.
The CCP recently faced another scandal. “Heroes” – the blockbuster film “Battle at Chosin Reservoir” heavily promoted by the CCP, was recently exposed by American veterans who participated in the battle for featuring “fictitious scenes,” such as American generals paying tribute to Chinese troops, which they stated as “impossible.” Furthermore, despite the immense disparity in forces, where U.S. troops broke through enemy lines and evacuated all equipment and nearly 100,000 Korean refugees, the film depicted a different narrative of heroism and victory for the CCP.
Over a dozen U.S. Marines who fought at Chosin Reservoir during the 1950 Korean War, along with their families, gathered in Washington D.C., commemorating the 74th anniversary of the victory at Chosin Reservoir on the Marines’ 249th anniversary on November 10th.
Since its release in September 2021, the mainland’s patriotic film “Battle at Chosin Reservoir” has reportedly grossed 5.695 billion RMB at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film in Chinese history. The movie portrays the Chosin Reservoir battle in the early stages of the Korean War in 1950. According to Xinhua News Agency, by February 2022, over 100 million people had watched this propaganda film.
General Smith, commander of the U.S. Marine Division in the film, received the most focus among Americans. The movie depicted General Smith saluting Chinese soldiers who froze to death during the Marine Division’s southward retreat. However, there is no evidence to support such an action by Smith.
At 92 years old, Stanley L. Spangle told the Voice of America, “For us, the Chinese Communist forces are the enemy, regardless of life or death, we would never pay respects to the enemy.”
Milton Walker, who served as artillery during the Chosin Reservoir battle, stated that General Smith was an excellent gentleman who cared deeply for his subordinates. The portrayal of General Smith saluting the enemy in the film contradicted his character and demeanor.
Smith’s granddaughter and biographer, Gail Shisler, watched the film online and shared that the portrayal was likely fabricated by the Chinese side to create a heroic narrative for the CCP, considering their defeat in the battle, crafting an epic hero tale seems challenging!
David “Ben” Wells, an American volunteer assisting the centenarian combat heroes at the commemorative event, expressed, “In the 1950s, we were against communism, in the 1960s, we were against communism, and even today, we continue to stand against communism. We love our free country and society, so we will never pay respects to communist forces.”
Participants in the Chosin Reservoir battle emphasized that for the American side, the engagement faced “extremely disparate” forces — with the CCP attempting to encircle and annihilate U.S. troops with ten times their strength, strategically occupying advantageous terrain and setting up ambushes in mountainous regions, poised to divide and conquer the American forces.
The Chosin Reservoir battle is recognized as the first battle after the establishment of the CCP. CCP historical documents show that Mao Zedong instructed Song Shilun, Commander and Political Commissar of the 9th Corps and Deputy Commander of the so-called “Volunteer Army,” to defeat and completely annihilate the U.S. Marine Division at Chosin Reservoir.
U.S. military historian Charles Neimeyer noted that the U.S. Marine Division located on the western side of Chosin Reservoir managed to break out of the encirclement, preserving the majority of their forces, evacuating almost all equipment, and in the process, decisively defeating a significant number of enemy troops, which could be deemed a miracle.
Additionally, the U.S. troops assisted in evacuating nearly 100,000 Korean refugees who followed them and were determined to escape from North Korea. Among them were the parents of Moon Jae-in, who later became the President of South Korea.
While the U.S. Marine Division suffered heavy casualties during the battle at Chosin Reservoir, the losses on the CCP’s side were even more severe. Song Shilun described the harshness of the battle at Chosin Reservoir as surpassing that of the Long March in his memoir.
The production of the CCP’s political propaganda film “Battle at Chosin Reservoir” did not aim to depict the truth but rather to glorify the bravery of the CCP’s army, inciting nationalist sentiments among supporters. However, upon exploring the historical truth, it is revealed that the film mirrors the CCP’s consistency in lies and violence. On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces suddenly crossed the 38th parallel, occupying 90% of Korean territory in less than two months.
Subsequently, the United Nations authorized the UN forces to block North Korea’s communist regime from advancing south. American and UN forces counterattacked, recapturing Seoul, seizing Pyongyang, and advancing directly to the Sino-Korean border.
At this point, Mao Zedong involved China in the aggressive war between North and South Korea, using the so-called “Volunteer Army” as cannon fodder. Declassified Soviet files reveal a death toll of up to 1 million. Of the 14,000 captured Chinese “volunteers,” post-war, many refused to be repatriated to China and opted to seek refuge in Taiwan.
Participants of the Chosin Reservoir battle emphasized that no true American officer or soldier would ever pay respects to the Communist Party at any time, past or future. They stand vehemently against communism, opposing its spread and striving to safeguard freedom-loving countries and societies.
