Israeli military officials announced on Sunday (September 1st) that they had discovered the bodies of six slain hostages in a tunnel in Rafah, southern Gaza. Among them was an Israeli-American. President Biden expressed outrage at the news, stating that Hamas leaders must be held accountable for these crimes.
The spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces, Daniel Hagari, disclosed during a press briefing that the six victims were identified as Carmel Gat, 40 years old, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Alexander Lobanov, 32, Almog Sarusi, 27, and Ori Danino, 25. Their bodies have been repatriated to Israel.
“Based on our preliminary assessment, they were cruelly murdered by Hamas terrorists shortly before our arrival,” said Hagari.
Hamas, on the other hand, claimed that the hostages were “killed by the Jewish nationalist’s bombing” and attributed their deaths to Israel’s ongoing warfare in Gaza and American support for the conflict.
President Biden confirmed in a statement, “We have now confirmed that one of the hostages killed by these wicked terrorists of Hamas is the American citizen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin.”
The President added that he was “shocked and furious” at the news. Hersh was among the innocent victims brutally attacked during an Israeli music festival on October 7, 2023.
“Hearing of his death breaks my heart; it is a tragedy that should be condemned. There is no doubt that the Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. We will continue tirelessly to secure an agreement and ensure the release of the remaining hostages,” stated Biden.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took to the social media platform X to say, “Today’s tragic news serves as a devastating reminder that all hostages must be unconditionally released to end the nightmare of war in Gaza.”
Following the announcement by the Israeli military of discovering the bodies of six hostages in Gaza, protests erupted across Israel. Protestors expressed anger towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to secure the release of the Gaza hostages.
Netanyahu, in response to the news of the six hostages being killed, declared that Israel will not rest until the perpetrators are apprehended.
He expressed condolences to the victims, calling it a “difficult day.” He added that, like the entire nation, he was profoundly shocked by the cold-blooded murder of the six Israeli hostages.
“The ones who kill hostages are not seeking to reach an agreement,” he stated. The Israeli Prime Minister faces pressure from both domestic and international communities to negotiate a ceasefire with Hamas and secure the release of the remaining hostages.
Israeli officials reported that on Sunday, three Israeli police officers were killed in a shooting near the city of Hebron in the West Bank.
Authorities stated that the three officers were shot dead while on patrol on a road near Tarqumiyah when a passing vehicle opened fire.
Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed the incident, saying, “We are fighting an enemy that wants to murder all of us on every front.”
Since August 28, hundreds of Israeli troops have been conducting raids in the West Bank, marking one of the largest operations in the region by the Israeli Defense Forces in months. Israel has labeled this operation as an effort to root out Islamic militant forces.
