Conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon has once again donated $50 million to a super political action committee supporting former President Trump, becoming the organization’s largest donor in this election cycle.
The super PAC, “Make America Great Again Inc.” (MAGA Inc.), submitted a document to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday, August 20th, disclosing Mellon’s substantial contribution of $50 million made on July 15th, coinciding with the opening day of the Republican National Convention.
Timothy Mellon, heir to the fortune of New York’s Mellon Bank (BNY Mellon), is a long-time conservative billionaire donor to the Republican Party. Since 2023, he has donated over $115 million to MAGA Inc., making him the largest donor to the super PAC in this election cycle to date.
In addition to his contributions to MAGA Inc., Mellon has also donated $25 million to a super PAC supporting independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., bringing his total political contributions in this cycle to over $150 million.
This is one of the largest individual political donations in a single election cycle ever disclosed.
Mellon’s donations are crucial for MAGA Inc. Out of the $54 million raised by the super PAC in July, Mellon’s funds accounted for over 90%, with approximately half of the organization’s current cash reserves coming from Mellon’s donations.
Currently, Trump’s campaign team has around $128 million in cash on hand, while the Republican National Committee (RNC) has approximately $99 million.
MAGA Inc. has been increasing TV advertising spending to support Trump’s campaign and counter the Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
Mellon resides in Wyoming and is rarely seen in the media. He has invested in and led transportation-related companies and is also an amateur pilot. Forbes estimates the Mellon family’s assets to be around $14.1 billion.
Mellon has donated $50 million in one go twice in this election cycle, with the previous instance being on May 31st, the day after a New York jury found Trump guilty of 34 criminal charges in the “Hush Money Case,” when the billionaire made a significant donation to MAGA Inc.
