113th National Day of the Republic of China Highlights Strong Friendship Between California and Taiwan

On the auspicious occasion of the National Day of the Republic of China, celebrating its 113th anniversary, a grand flag-raising ceremony was held in Santa Clara County Government Plaza in the South Bay of San Francisco Bay Area on the morning of October 5th.

Despite the scorching sun and high temperatures on that day, the volunteers of the “Chinese National Day Committee of Golden Gate Area” arrived early at the venue, braving the heat to meticulously set up decorations. The plaza was adorned with both the American flag and the flag of the Republic of China, symbolizing the celebration.

Dignitaries from various sectors gathered at the celebration, including California State Senator Dave Cortese, California Assembly Members Roda Len and Tim Lee, Santa Clara County Supervisor Jaime Lee, Fremont Mayor Lily Gaau, Councilmember Shao Yang, Milpitas City Councilmember Hon Lien, Palo Alto Mayor Lydia Kou, Saratoga City Councilmember Kookie Fitzsimmons, Cupertino City Councilmember Liang Fang Zhao, and many mainstream politicians and school district officials, who offered congratulations and presented commendations.

At 10:10 a.m., the Northern California Taiwan Motorcycle Team revved their engines, the Palo Alto Drumming and Fitness Group and Tamkang University Drum Team beat their drums enthusiastically, and the FASCA lion dance troupe from Overseas Youth Cultural Volunteer Group performed, marking the beginning of the National Day ceremony.

In his address, Chairman Yeh Yunhe of the National Day Committee stated, “Looking back 113 years ago, Dr. Sun Yat-sen and our predecessors sacrificed and struggled to establish the first democratic republic in Asia – the Republic of China. Today, it has evolved into a mature democratic country with a solid economic foundation, diverse culture, and social harmony. Taiwan is a place where global Chinese seek freedom, democracy, and human rights to learn from. We must cherish and continue to strive, unite, and cooperate to create a stable and prosperous overseas community.”

Director Lai Mingqi of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco emphasized in his speech that the democratic system of the Republic of China has proven to be successful in Taiwan, asserting that freedom and democracy will always triumph over authoritarian regimes.

He highlighted the resolution passed by the California Senate on August 15th, showing support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, which marked the culmination of a decade-long effort. This resolution symbolizes the strong friendship between California and Taiwan.

In an interview with Epoch Times, Director Lai Mingqi said, “Our overseas compatriots and friends have gathered in full force today, expressing their support for the Republic of China and for freedom and democracy! It also showcases the deep friendship between Taiwan and California, and we look forward to a larger event next year.”

County Supervisor Jaime Lee, in an interview with Epoch Times, stressed the significance of the day for the Republic of China, urging people to remember history and cherish the freedoms and democracy that predecessors fought for with their lives. He expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Sun Yat-sen for his pioneering efforts.

Mayor Lily Gaau of Fremont, speaking to Epoch Times, expressed her honor and joy, saying, “My parents were born in China and raised in Taiwan. Fremont, like many American cities, is a melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, and other ethnic groups living together peacefully and harmoniously.”

Councilmember Shao Yang of Fremont noted that the continuation of American-Chinese culture in the city contributes to its prosperity. He congratulated the Republic of China on its flourishing national destiny.

Councilmember Liang Fang Zhao of Cupertino once again thanked the volunteers for their hard work in organizing the celebratory event, saying, “We hold this celebration every year, and I want to thank everyone! Cupertino has had many city council members of Taiwanese descent in the past, as do our current school board members. I urge voters to support candidates who truly represent their voices!”

Various supporting teams at the flag-raising ceremony included the Chung Yung Motorcycle Flag Team, Whampoa Flag Team, Navy and Air Force Flag Team, Fuxing Hill and Beixin Girl Flag Team, and Boy Scout flag teams, among others. In addition, numerous overseas community associations, outstanding members of overseas Chinese communities, and Bay Area residents of various ethnic backgrounds totaling over a thousand came together to celebrate the 113th National Day of the Republic of China.

The day’s program included performances such as Taiwanese folk dances, Shaolin martial arts, and the San Tai Zi drumming. Additionally, the organizers thoughtfully prepared over a thousand snacks and small pouches to give to guests, spreading joy and festivity.
