Since March 2026, the price of blueberries in China has almost halved compared to the Chinese New Year period. In many supermarkets, a half-kilogram pack has decreased from nearly 30 RMB to 19.9 RMB; at wholesale markets, a box has dropped to around 80 RMB from 150 RMB. The price of high-quality blueberries in Yunnan has dropped to 30 RMB per kilogram, a decrease of about 50% compared to last year. The online search term “blueberry price plunge” has been trending continuously, drawing public attention.
According to a report on CCTV on April 10th, previously a small box of blueberries would cost two to three tens of RMB, but now a half-kilogram pack is priced at 19.9 RMB, with blueberries from Yunnan even being sold by the bucket at prices as low as thirty or forty RMB per kilogram.
In the short term, with blueberries in Yunnan ripening and flooding the market, there is a concentration of fresh fruits being brought to market. Looking at the long term, in 2025, the national blueberry production reached 810,000 tons. However, domestic annual demand still exceeds 1 million tons, leaving a gap of about 190,000 tons.
The biggest weakness in the Chinese blueberry market is the variety – the main cultivated varieties rely almost entirely on imports, with a dependence on high-end seedlings of over 70%, and growers have to pay high patent fees. Domestically bred varieties account for less than 10% of the market share, making them difficult to promote and with low acceptance.
Another concern is the concentration of the market during the peak season. Currently, blueberry supplies in the country are still concentrated in April, accounting for nearly half of the annual production, making the prices vulnerable to fluctuations. This is also a key reason for the significant price reduction this year.
While prices have generally fallen, the market is not uniformly affected. Prices of ordinary medium-sized fruits have decreased, but prices remain relatively high for high-quality, large-sized, and special varieties. Currently, premium gift box blueberries can still be sold for 25 to 49 RMB per unit.
As the topic of the “blueberry price plunge” continues to ferment, netizens from various regions have expressed different opinions.
Some netizens feel that even at 19.9 RMB for a half-kilogram pack, blueberries are still considered expensive, and they hope to see prices drop to 9.9 RMB before considering it a significant price reduction.
Others mentioned that although blueberries are cheaper now, with pork prices being low, they still find blueberries relatively more expensive compared to pork.
Regional price discrepancies have also attracted attention. A netizen from Fujian named “苑小呆a” mentioned, “Blueberries are sold for 69 RMB per jin at the fruit shop in my area.”
A netizen from Shandong named “淘漉甄金” commented, “If I come across high-quality blueberries priced at 30 RMB per kilogram, I would definitely consider buying them online, but at this price, the shipping cost might increase.”
