Two maintenance workers tragically killed in elevator accident in a residential area in Hefei

On the morning of April 2nd at 10 o’clock, an elevator cabin in a residential area in Luyang District, Hefei City, Anhui Province, plummeted, resulting in the tragic deaths of 2 maintenance workers on site.

According to reports by Jiemu News, a warning about the elevator accident in the residential area spread through several local WeChat groups that day. The message indicated that around 10:18 AM on the 2nd, while 2 maintenance workers were conducting repairs on the top of the elevator cabin on the 18th floor of Building 6, Unit 3 in a residential area in Luyang District, the cabin fell to the 1st floor. Emergency responders who arrived at the scene confirmed that both workers had ceased breathing and their heartbeats had stopped.

On the morning of the 3rd, a resident who received the warning message mentioned that the accident occurred in a residential area in Gu Cheng Community, Wu Zhou Road Street, Luyang District. Property personnel in the neighborhood verified that a safety accident did indeed occur in one of the elevators in Building 6, Unit 3 of the residential area on the morning of the 2nd, resulting in the death of 2 workers. The elevator involved in the incident is now inoperable, while the other elevator is functioning normally.

Staff from the Hefei Municipal Emergency Management Bureau stated that an investigation team would be established to conduct inquiries at the site of the incident and the construction company involved.

The accident has sparked online attention, with many netizens expressing their concerns. Some shared their personal experiences with faulty elevators in Hefei, highlighting the importance of regular maintenance and ensuring safety for residents.

Furthermore, there have been numerous elevator accidents in Mainland China in recent years. In February 2025, an elevator in Kunming City, Yunnan Province suddenly fell from the 17th floor to the 33rd floor, resulting in the death of one homeowner. Additionally, in October 2023, an elevator accident in Mile City, Yunnan led to at least 3 fatalities and 17 injuries. In August 2023, a residential building in Furong District, Changsha, experienced an elevator dropping incident, injuring 3 homeowners.

The frequency of elevator malfunctions in Mainland China remains a concern for public safety, prompting calls for stricter regulations and better maintenance practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.
