On April 3rd, a section of the Huwu Expressway in Jilin Province, China, experienced a series of multi-vehicle collisions due to a sudden heavy snowfall, leading to slippery road conditions.
According to videos shared by netizens, in the afternoon of April 3rd, over thirty vehicles were involved in a chain collision on the segment of the Huwu Expressway from Songyuan to Changchun direction, caused by the unexpected snow weather.
Multiple video clips circulated online show heavy snow falling on the expressway, resulting in extremely low visibility and a thick layer of snow covering the road surface. A passenger bus appeared to have skidded and blocked the road, leading to a cascade of collisions as following vehicles, unable to brake in time due to poor visibility, crashed into the bus one after another, causing significant damage to some vehicles. Many drivers got out of their cars to assess the situation, causing a serious traffic jam on the entire expressway.
According to an eyewitness driver interviewed by Red Star News, it had been raining continuously on April 3rd, which unexpectedly turned into a heavy snowfall. He witnessed multiple vehicle collisions from the opposite lane, some cars even flipping into ditches, and drivers had to proceed slowly along the tracks of the preceding vehicles.
As of around 5 p.m. that day, some vehicle owners were still stranded on the Huwu Expressway within the territory of Nongan County. One driver mentioned that their vehicle had been stuck for over 4 hours, with snow still falling at the scene.
In response to the incident, traffic police officers in Songyuan stated that the accident occurred within the jurisdiction of Changchun, and both local traffic police departments were handling the situation. The officer mentioned that there was a blizzard in the area, likely causing slippery roads leading to the accident, and the involved section of the expressway had been closed. However, no casualties were mentioned.
Due to the snowfall, information from the “JiXing Expressway” mini-program indicated that as of 5:30 p.m. on April 3rd, out of 249 toll booths on highways in Jilin Province, 124 entrance lanes were closed.
