A recent poll shows that the majority of New York voters support providing proof of citizenship and requiring photo identification each time they vote. The “Siena College Poll,” released on April 2nd, surveyed 804 registered voters in New York between March 23rd and 26th. The survey revealed that 54% of voters support the requirement for voters to prove their citizenship and show identification when casting their votes, including 82% of Republican voters, 36% of Democratic voters, and 63% of independent voters.
The survey also asked voters about other issues, with the following results:
1. 65% support the idea that the president should need congressional approval to launch a war.
2. When it comes to “eliminating filibuster rules in the U.S. Senate,” 40% are in support, 33% are against, and 14% are neutral. The filibuster rule requires most bills to have at least 60 senators’ support to pass, rather than a simple majority of the 100 senators.
3. 60% oppose continuing the president’s tariff policies.
4. 57% of voters oppose taking action against media and journalists who criticize the president or his policies, including 68% of Democrats, 33% of Republicans, and 59% of independent voters.
5. President Trump’s approval ratings remain relatively stable, with a job approval rating of 36% to 61% and a favorability rating of 32% to 40%.
6. In the gubernatorial election, Hochul still leads but has seen a 7-percentage-point decrease in her lead, going from 51% to 31% to 47% to 34%.
7. The majority still support New York City Mayor Mandani: 44% to 37%.
8. 46% of people say they would choose Johnson as the attorney general.
9. A majority of New Yorkers, 53% to 30%, support taxing the wealthy.
10. The proportion of those supporting “deporting illegal immigrants” has decreased but still remains in the majority at 44% to 33%; meanwhile, the majority of voters (62%) oppose the way ICE arrests illegal immigrants.
The margin of error for this survey is +/- 4.2%.
