Shaanxi female teacher dragged to death by drunk driving, family refuses compensation and seeks heavier sentence.

Two years ago, in Baimao County, Ankang, Shaanxi Province, a 50-year-old female teacher named Xue was hit and run over by two vehicles on her way home from work, and was then dragged alive by a third vehicle for 5.9 kilometers until she died. Recently, the case was brought to trial at the Xunyang City Court in Ankang, but has not been concluded yet.

According to reports from several mainland Chinese media outlets, the incident occurred on the evening of April 29, 2024, when 50-year-old teacher Xue from Baimao County, Shaanxi, was killed in a car accident on her way home.

Investigations revealed that at around 8:40 p.m. on the 29th, Liu hit Xue with his vehicle, causing her to fall and be crushed, before getting out of the car to check and call the police. At that moment, another sedan approached and ran over Xue’s body again, then dragged her under the car and drove away.

It wasn’t until around 9 p.m. that the car passed over a speed bump in front of a primary school and had to stop due to the obstruction. People in the car noticed a body beneath the car chassis. However, instead of offering help, they did not rescue Xue but rather fueled up and drove over the speed bump to escape. Xue was left on the ground, having been dragged for 5.9 kilometers.

The autopsy report showed that Xue died from severe open cranial brain injury and closed chest injuries caused by being hit and run over twice before being dragged.

In order to seek justice for her sister, Xue Huanli, the sister of the deceased, has spent the past two years tirelessly advocating for her sister’s case, even self-studying law and researching similar cases.

Xue Huanli described how her sister’s nails were all torn off, her body covered in drag marks and crush injuries, presenting a heartbreaking sight. The five individuals in the second vehicle were all officials from the Baihe Road Breeding and Management Center of Shaanxi Traffic Control Group (a large state-owned enterprise in Shaanxi) responsible for highway safety management, yet they broke the law. After the incident, the responsible driver even attempted a 700,000 yuan private settlement, which was rejected by the family.

The indictment revealed that on that day, Xue Xu, Xiao, Liu, Zhao Bobo, and Qu Li attended a dinner and shared four bottles of liquor. Xue Xu, as the unit leader, allowed Xiao to drive towards Baimao County despite knowing he had been drinking.

After the incident, Xue Xu removed the memory card from the dashcam during the escape and later went to Xiao’s dormitory where they destroyed the chip and disposed of it in the sewer. Xiao and others tried to shift the blame onto someone else, but the man who took the blame realized the severity of the situation and exposed the truth.

On December 25th last year, Xiao was charged with traffic accident crimes and brought to trial, but the case has not been concluded yet.

On March 26th this year, Xue Xu’s case was brought to trial at the Xunyang City Court, but Xue Huanli mentioned that the trial was also very tumultuous, with the scheduled 9:30 a.m. start time being repeatedly delayed. During the trial, Xue Xu denied the allegations made by the prosecution and blamed Xiao instead. Currently, the case has been postponed for further review.

She expressed that the state of her sister’s death was horrific, and they will not accept any compensation or forgiveness from the other party, only seeking a heavy sentence from the court. Additionally, they cannot accept that Zhao Bobo and Qu Li have not been prosecuted, believing that they should also be held accountable for their legal responsibilities.
