In China, the economic situation is getting colder with foreign companies withdrawing, private enterprises closing down, and the middle class collapsing. The window of opportunities is disappearing, and Chinese society is entering an era of gig economy. Despite the seemingly vibrant political propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party, many people cannot see hope. Even those who still have some money are afraid to spend it, leading many to choose to adopt a “lying flat” lifestyle or go abroad.
In an interview with Epoch Times, a doctor named Li Nuo (pseudonym) from Beihai, Guangxi, expressed that the Chinese economy started declining after the epidemic. Foreign companies in the area have almost all withdrawn, leaving many people unemployed, especially young people who cannot find jobs. Li Nuo mentioned that various industries are struggling to make ends meet, with hospitals significantly reducing salaries.
He further noted that some areas in Guangdong are even worse off, facing a very bleak economic situation. In Hunan’s Chenzhou, Xie Tao (pseudonym) told Epoch Times that the local economy has sharply declined, and the government’s finance is visibly tight. Local authorities last year unified regulations, restricting official banquet expenses to the level of ordinary fast food consumption.
Xie Tao mentioned the delay in infrastructure projects in his area, citing an example of a road that was supposed to be cemented a year ago but has shown no progress. He pointed out the drastic decrease in manpower at nearby businesses, with some factories barely operating and facing difficulties resuming operations.
Similarly, Shiqian (pseudonym), a retired civil servant from Chengdu, shared that while the impact on retirees may not be significant, the job market is challenging for them now, compared to previous years.
She highlighted the frustration among young people in China, noting the lack of job opportunities, which has led many to depend on their parents for financial support. Shiqian stressed that while some youth might find low-paying jobs, the cost of living, especially housing expenses, makes it challenging to sustain themselves.
Reflecting on the current situation, Shiqian emphasized the struggles faced by many private businesses, indicating the dire consequences of their closure on employment prospects. She illustrated the challenges faced by her acquaintances, stating that even public servants are experiencing wage cuts due to the economic downturn.
According to witness reports from various regions, there is a prevalent sense of discontent among the population, with many expressing concerns about the bleak economic conditions and dwindling opportunities for advancement. The once vibrant economy that symbolized hope during the era of reform and opening up now appears to have taken a sharp turn, causing disillusionment and a feeling of hopelessness among the populace.
The widespread portrayal of economic prosperity on state television is deemed by some as a facade that fails to mirror the actual socioeconomic realities faced by the masses. Shiqian further reiterated the burden on the citizens, citing increased living costs and limited disposable income, which has constrained consumer spending and fueled uncertainty about the future.
Furthermore, the escalating prices of essential goods and services have added to the financial strains on households, leading to growing concerns about affordability and accessibility. As a result, many individuals opt to prioritize savings over expenditures, reflecting the prevailing atmosphere of economic uncertainty and instability.
In light of the prevailing economic challenges, an increasing number of individuals are contemplating alternative means for livelihood, including seeking employment in unconventional sectors or exploring opportunities abroad. The prevailing sentiment of discontent and frustration among the populace underscores a pressing need for comprehensive reforms and structural adjustments to address the root causes of economic decline.
The sentiments expressed by individuals from different walks of life underscore the multidimensional impact of the economic downturn on society, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures and sustainable solutions to revitalize the economy and restore confidence among the population.
