New York City Mayor Mamdani announced on Wednesday (April 1) the launch of an online childcare resource platform and interactive map to integrate scattered childcare resources from different channels, helping parents more efficiently search and compare suitable childcare options, while also providing information on financial assistance.
This platform (link: nyc.gov/childcare) is the first time in New York City that all childcare service information is centralized in a single portal. Through the official website, users can filter childcare facilities based on factors such as geographical location, child age, and costs, and access basic information including services offered, application eligibility, and contact details.
In addition to free and low-cost childcare options, the platform also integrates information on “childcare financial assistance,” explaining that eligible families can apply for subsidies or vouchers to help cover the costs of private childcare services. The resources aim to reduce the financial burden on families and expand the choices for middle and low-income families.
Mayor Mamdani stated that in the past, parents often had to spend a lot of time searching and comparing information from different sources. The new platform aims to streamline the process, reduce the cost of accessing information, and enable parents to make decisions more directly.
Lisa Gelobter, Director of the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI), stated that the platform integrates data from approximately 10,000 childcare facilities across the five administrative districts and provides standardized information to reduce the need for families to repeatedly search on different websites. According to the city government, the interactive map incorporated feedback from parents and childcare advocacy groups during development, and underwent multiple rounds of usability testing to enhance the clarity of information presentation and user-friendliness. The website supports multiple language interfaces, including Chinese, and can be accessed on mobile devices.
In addition to basic search functions, the platform also offers various support tools, such as explanations of various childcare programs (such as 2-K, 3-K, and pre-kindergarten classes), questionnaires to help parents filter their needs, and detailed information covering health and safety inspection records, transportation directions, and contact details. Furthermore, the platform collaborates with childcare resource centers to provide telephone and email consultation services.
Kellan Calder, a parent and community representative of Yorkers United for Child Care, stated in a declaration that in the past, childcare information was scattered across social media and informal channels, making it difficult to search. The new platform is expected to increase information transparency and shorten the time needed for families to find childcare resources.
