In a school in Handan City, Hebei Province, a high school freshman named Li Ting (alias) was sexually assaulted by the school’s Communist Party Secretary Qiao Mujun during a table tennis practice session. Qiao Mujun offered to settle the matter privately with the victim’s parents for 100,000 yuan, but they refused.
According to a report in China News Weekly, Li Ting’s mother Wang Fang (alias) revealed that Qiao Mujun often posted school introductions on his personal account. Li Ting was attracted to these introductions before the entrance exam and started following Qiao Mujun. She later decided to apply to the school he recommended and was accepted.
An informant named Han Fei (alias) stated that Qiao Mujun was skilled at playing table tennis and often played with students. Wang Fang mentioned that Qiao Mujun had previously coached Li Ting in table tennis at school.
On February 21st (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year), Qiao Mujun contacted Li Ting through the online platform account mentioned earlier, inviting her to practice table tennis at school. Subsequently, he sexually assaulted her in his office.
However, Li Ting did not inform her parents about the incident. Wang Fang noticed changes in her daughter’s behavior, such as becoming depressed and crying secretly at night.
In March, Wang Fang discovered records of Li Ting purchasing contraceptive pills on her phone and only learned about her daughter’s ordeal after questioning her.
Li Ting intended to buy the pills out of fear of pregnancy. Due to her daughter’s emotional turmoil, Wang Fang had to temporarily withdraw her from school. She confronted Qiao Mujun at the school, who did not apologize for his despicable actions.
Wang Fang stated that Qiao Mujun initially offered 100,000 yuan for a settlement, which he later increased to 200,000 yuan. However, she rejected his offers, emphasizing that she would not trade her daughter’s well-being for money. Her demands included her daughter receiving medical care, transferring schools promptly, and holding Qiao Mujun accountable both criminally and civilly.
On March 18th, Wang Fang reported the incident to the police. Qiao Mujun was detained by the public security bureau of a certain district in Handan City on March 22nd, and on March 30th, he was arrested by the district procuratorate.
On April 1st, a staff member of the first handling unit of the procuratorate in the same district of Handan City disclosed that the case falls under the jurisdiction of their juvenile crime unit. When asked for details, they stated that they could not disclose further information to unrelated personnel.
A staff member from the involved school mentioned that they would not accept phone interviews regarding the case.
Following the exposure of the incident, netizens engaged in heated discussions in comment sections. Many questioned how individuals like Qiao Mujun could hold leadership positions in schools. Some demanded his immediate dismissal and incarceration.
