On Tuesday, March 31, American military leaders announced a key development in the US-Iran conflict, revealing that the United States’ growing air superiority over Iran has opened the door for the B-52 “Stratofortress” bombers to carry out missions over Iranian airspace.
The US Air Force’s fleet of B-52 bombers has been in service for over 70 years. While not as fast or stealthy as the B-1 “Lancer” or B-2 “Spirit” bombers, the B-52 remains a primary strike platform. With significant upgrades, it is expected to continue its service for decades to come.
During a Pentagon press conference on Tuesday, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, introduced the latest developments in the ongoing US-Iran conflict over the past month.
With the expanding air superiority of the US military over the Iranian forces, the deployment of the B-52 bombers – large in size and slower in speed – for airstrikes within Iranian airspace signifies the overwhelming advantage of the US military over Iran’s air defense systems.
“In the past 30 days, we have targeted over 11,000 objectives. With the enhanced air superiority, we have successfully initiated the first B-52 overland bombing missions, enabling us to continue to suppress the enemy,” General Caine stated.
Since the commencement of the “Operation Wrath of the Epic” military operation on February 28, military officials like General Caine have highlighted that the primary targets have been Iran’s air defense systems and missiles. The US-Israeli forces have employed physical ammunition to weaken these systems and secure air superiority over Tehran and other regions of Iran.
The Pentagon also revealed that they have utilized cyber, space, and electronic warfare tactics to cripple Iranian defense systems and disrupt their communications.
The B-52 bombers function as large “arsenal” aircraft, carrying out devastating strikes in regions where the US maintains air superiority. In the future, they will also be capable of launching drones, firing laser weapons, and serving as airborne command and control centers.
Continuous modernization upgrades to the B-52’s avionics, targeting systems, and weapons bays have enabled compatibility with new types of ammunition. The operating cost per flight hour of the B-52 is far lower than that of the B-2 bomber. With over 70 B-52 bombers in active service, they can be deployed for repetitive flight missions at any given time, making them suitable for large-scale combat operations that do not require stealth capabilities.
During the press conference, General Caine mentioned that the US has observed a continuous decrease in the launch frequency of Iran’s missiles and drones. Although not completely diminished, the trend is unmistakably clear.
He disclosed that the US military maintains absolute superiority at sea, with over 150 Iranian vessels destroyed, further weakening Iran’s operational capabilities in the Gulf region.
When asked about the possibility of ground operations, General Caine stated that the US military possesses a “wide range of military options.” The reinforcement of troops in the Middle East does not necessarily imply an imminent ground war, but rather aims to provide President Trump with more options when necessary.
