Flushing Bar Murder Case: Defendant Sentenced to 25 Years to Life Imprisonment

New York Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on March 23 that Jason Schuler, the defendant in a shocking bar murder case in Flushing, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. The defendant stabbed to death an unsuspecting customer in a bar in Flushing in September 2023.

According to the prosecutor’s office, 41-year-old Schuler was convicted by a jury in February of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Judge Kenneth Holder of the Queens Supreme Court handed down the sentence on March 18.

Katz stated that the defendant, intoxicated and armed with a knife, roamed the streets that night and cruelly killed the victim without any provocation. She emphasized that such senseless violence would be met with swift and decisive punishment.

The incident unfolded on the evening of September 24, 2023, around 7:30 p.m. when Schuler, visibly intoxicated, purchased alcohol from a liquor store in Flushing and concealed a kitchen knife in his pants. About an hour later, he returned to the same store to buy more alcohol. Around 9 p.m., he was drinking on Main Street with his companions before heading to Kelly’s Pub on 41st Avenue. At approximately 9:25 p.m., 45-year-old victim Elliott Christopher Ortiz entered the bar with his friends. Ten minutes later, the bar staff noticed Schuler drinking his own alcohol and asked him to leave. The defendant then went to the back patio of the bar, where he encountered the victim’s group.

Suddenly and without any dispute or provocation, Schuler pulled out the kitchen knife from his pants and launched an attack on the unsuspecting victim from behind, stabbing him below the temple about 7.5 inches deep and severing the carotid artery. During the ensuing scuffle, the victim’s friend managed to wound the assailant and ultimately disarm him.

Following the altercation, Schuler fled the bar and met up with his companions nearby. When officers approached him, they found him covered in the victim’s blood, even asking his companions to take pictures of him. The victim was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The case went to trial on February 19 this year, and after closing arguments on the 27th, the jury took only about two hours to reach a guilty verdict.
