Kenyan authorities announced on Sunday (March 22) that since the beginning of this month when Kenya was hit by heavy rain and floods, at least 81 people have died, and thousands have been displaced, with heavy rainfall continuing in most parts of the country.
The spokesperson of the Kenyan National Police, Muchiri Nyaga, said in a statement on Sunday: “Unfortunately, the cumulative death toll has risen to 81. The capital Nairobi has been the most severely affected, with 37 fatalities.”
Nyaga also noted that flash floods have swept through multiple areas of the country, causing approximately 2,690 families to be displaced and resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure and properties.
Currently, the Kenyan police are closely collaborating with other emergency rescue departments to conduct ground search and rescue operations, as well as providing emergency shelters for the disaster-affected individuals.
The Kenyan Meteorological Department has issued a warning that heavy rainfall will continue across the country in the coming days, urging the public to remain vigilant and follow safety recommendations.
