In a recent announcement on March 20th, New York State Assemblyman Ron Kim, in collaboration with the community organization “RISE Now”, unveiled plans to launch a series of three “Small Business Financial Excellence Seminars” in Flushing. These seminars aim to provide local small business owners with systematic training and practical support free of charge.
Funded with $15,300 from the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD), the program has garnered support from State Assemblywoman Nily Rozic and City Councilwoman Sandra Ung. The seminar series targets both startups and growing small businesses, covering core topics such as business structure, financial management, tax compliance, and audit preparedness to enhance the financial capacity and long-term sustainability of small businesses.
The three seminars are as follows: The first session, “Enterprise Structure and Financial Management Fundamentals,” will take place on Saturday, March 28th, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Topics include choosing different company structures (such as LLC, Corporation), basic principles of daily accounting and financial management, and an overview of tax preparation concepts. This session is suitable for new and developing small business owners and will be led by registered accountant Yun Chen Lin.
The second session, “Tax Responsibilities and Compliance Management,” is scheduled for Sunday, March 29th, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Key topics include sales tax and payroll tax basics, document retention, compliance requirements, common errors, and risk alerts to help strengthen compliance awareness. Yun Chen Lin will also lead this session.
The third session, “Enterprise Financial Strategies and Audit Preparedness Workshop,” will cover aspects like evaluating enterprise financial structures, risk analysis, improvement directions, and audit preparation frameworks. The timing is yet to be determined, and it will be conducted in a small group setting with a limit of 15 participants. This course will focus on assessing financial structures, identifying risks, and audit preparation frameworks, making it suitable for business owners looking to enhance the robustness of their financial systems.
RISE Center serves as a one-stop service platform providing government resource connections, employment information, business training, credit building, and financing channels.
Assemblyman Ron Kim emphasized that without necessary professional knowledge and support, small businesses are unable to retain more hard-earned money in their pockets. He highlighted the importance of these seminars, as every dollar recovered for small businesses will generate multiple returns to the local economy. This initiative not only strengthens community resilience but also contributes to building community and economic resilience across the state and the entire nation.
Qu Yuanyi, the CEO of RISE Center, noted that the organization is committed to providing culturally appropriate business services to the community and will further expand its service offerings. Seema Agnani, the CEO of CAPACD, stated that Flushing, as a culturally diverse and economically vibrant community, will benefit from such initiatives in promoting entrepreneurial opportunities and preventing the marginalization of the local economy.
