Europol announced on Friday that a joint operation involving law enforcement officers from 23 countries successfully dismantled a dark web scam platform disguised as selling child abuse images, identifying 440 users for further investigation.
The operation, codenamed “Operation Alice,” led by Europol, saw enforcement and investigative personnel from 23 countries collaborating over several years to eventually dismantle the fraudulent network. The main suspect targeted in the investigation is a 35-year-old man currently residing in China, responsible for hosting and operating up to 373,000 fraudulent websites. Although the man’s identity has been confirmed, specific information like his name has not been disclosed by Europol. The scale of his operation is described as staggering, and the case is still under further investigation.
The dark web platform identified as “Alice with Violence CP” purported to sell child abuse images, along with various illicit “services” such as credit card information and computer system access permissions. While luring buyers with these illegal “goods,” users who paid fees were left with nothing in return as the entire platform was a scam.
Although the platform used the guise of selling child abuse images, it did not actually provide any such content. Instead, it was specifically designed to defraud users attempting to purchase illegal material, ultimately aiming to profit from deception.
According to Europol estimates, approximately 10,000 individuals tried to buy illegal content through the platform, leading the main suspect to swindle around €345,000 (approximately $400,000). Authorities have successfully identified the identities of 440 users of the platform, with ongoing investigations expected to uncover more individuals involved in the case.
The operation, initiated in 2021 and spanning multiple years of international cooperation, finally yielded a breakthrough. Enforcement agencies from the 23 participating countries worked closely together, tracing fund flows and user trails to piece together the entirety of the fraudulent network.
Europol Director Catherine de Bolle emphasized the importance of international law enforcement cooperation, particularly in combating dark web criminal activities, which has become a vital tactic in the fight against such crimes. De Bolle highlighted that the “Operation Alice” sends a clear message that when the international law enforcement community collaborates, criminals will have nowhere to hide, and they will be found and held accountable.
Law enforcement authorities anticipate that as the investigation progresses, more individuals involved in the case will be brought to justice.
