A 14-year-old girl in Yuanping, Shanxi Province, is suspected of being frequently trampled on the head by her roommate at school, leading to severe cranial brain damage, resulting in her intelligence regressing to that of a 3-year-old, rendering her unable to care for herself.
According to Beijing Radio and Television Station, the victim’s mother stated that while her daughter was organizing items in the school dormitory, a classmate sleeping on the top bunk tightly held onto the bed rail with both hands and wildly trampled her head with both feet.
Family members also disclosed that after a doctor’s diagnosis, the girl suffered severe cranial brain damage, with her intelligence regressed to that of a three-year-old child, rendering her completely incapable of self-care. Currently, the child requires assistance from family members for eating and daily activities, placing a heavy burden on the family. Additionally, due to the need for extensive use of steroid medication for subsequent treatment, the girl’s weight has surged to over 200 kilograms.
The family further stated that after the incident, a teacher privately informed parents that the girl was often physically assaulted by two classmates, subjected to violence in multiple locations within the school, yet the school had not proactively informed the parents of the situation.
On January 8, 2025, the girl’s mother reported the bullying to the local public security authorities, but the local police refused to register the case citing that it was not under their jurisdiction.
On March 15, a year after the incident, the Yuanping City Education and Sports Bureau, one of the parties involved in the incident, made an official response, denying any “bullying” behavior and claiming that the conflicts between students were merely sporadic and brief conflicts, not classified as bullying. Regarding the cause of the girl’s current (severe cranial brain damage) condition, the officials stated that further assessment by authoritative institutions was required.
The official report indicated that the school claimed the victim girl suffered from hydrocephalus and enrolled in school in September 2024. Within just three months of enrollment, there were three conflicts between the girl and her classmates within a week, on November 29, November 30, and December 4, 2024. The girl left the school on December 13, 2024.
The report also revealed that following the incident, the victim girl’s mother continuously petitioned to the Municipal Committee, Municipal Government, Municipal Letters and Visits Bureau, and the Education Bureau, and filed a lawsuit with the Yuanping City Court on November 28, 2025. The girl underwent examinations and treatments in Shanghai, Beijing, and other places, with authorities assigning people to accompany her; meanwhile, officials also sent people to the girl’s home continuously.
The report further indicated that the school had covered various expenses for the parties involved amounting to 330,000 yuan, with related leaders personally covering examination and treatment costs of 111,000 yuan.
The official report quickly sparked discussions on the internet. Some netizens commented, “Isn’t this intentional harm?” “Three fights a week, practicing boxing?” “The intermittent brief conflict terminology usage and sentence construction capability.” “Just an ordinary conflict, it’s difficult to explain the severe cranial brain damage results.” “Since it’s already determined to be sporadic, meaning the school is not at fault, why pay her so much?” “Why did the school cover the costs? Where did the money come from?” “The perpetrators definitely have backing.” “Are officials trying to protect the perpetrators?” “Authorities are attempting to downplay the incident and shift blame.”
Some netizens also expressed concerns that the victim’s family will face immense pressure in caring for the girl for the rest of her life, as the current social security system lacks long-term medical assistance mechanisms for such severely injured individuals.
