Another “suspicious package” near the mayor’s residence, later ruled out

New York Police Department (NYPD) reported on Tuesday (March 10) that a “suspicious device” was found near the official residence on the east end of Manhattan Avenue, prompting the authorities to evacuate the surrounding area. Several hours later, the police announced that the danger had been eliminated. Just a few days ago, two men attempted to detonate homemade explosives near the mayor’s residence at Gracie Mansion. Law enforcement officials referred to the incident as an act of “ISIS-inspired terrorism.”

On Tuesday afternoon, NYPD posted on X platform, stating, “Due to the discovery of a suspicious device, East End Avenue between East 85th Street and East 87th Street, as well as East 86th Street between York Avenue and East End Avenue, has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Additionally, Carl Schurz Park is currently closed.”

Subsequently, the bomb squad entered the scene and removed the device, which was described as a container wrapped in camouflage tape and containing liquid. The police confirmed at 4 p.m. that the device posed no danger, but further tests would be conducted. Following that, NYPD informed the public that the relevant streets and parks had been reopened.

Mayor Mamdani took to X platform, saying, “Earlier today, a suspicious device was found near my home at Carl Schurz Park by the Gracie Mansion. The NYPD promptly responded and secured the area. Fortunately, the device was determined to be harmless. I want to thank the officers of the NYPD and the bomb squad for their swift actions in ensuring the safety of New Yorkers.”

Two protests took place near the mayor’s residence last Saturday, where two men from Pennsylvania attempted to detonate explosives, causing the area to temporarily become a crime scene.

19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi and 18-year-old Emir Balat face federal charges related to the incident, including illegal possession and use of “weapons of mass destruction,” transportation of explosives, and attempting to assist “specific foreign terror organizations.”

It is currently unclear if the investigation on Tuesday afternoon is connected to the events of Saturday.

The police reiterated to the public on Tuesday: “If you see something suspicious, report it immediately.” The hotline number for the police is 888-NYC-SAFE (888-692-7233).
