On March 9th, the New York Police Department (NYPD) held a graduation ceremony for new recruits at Madison Square Garden (MSG). A total of 968 new police officers who completed six months of training at the police academy joined the NYPD. NYPD Commissioner Tysch and New York City Mayor Mammadani delivered enthusiastic speeches at the event, welcoming the new officers and thanking the families of all the police officers for their support.
As always, Commissioner Tysch described the work of the NYPD as “noble” and “the most worthwhile.”
“This is not about fame or attention, but because it requires you to prioritize the safety of others over yourself, and demands that you exercise power with restraint,” said the female commissioner, who gained popularity for her firm approach in lowering the city’s crime rate to historic lows.
Tysch praised two officers, Assistant Commissioner Edwards and Chief Navarro, for their handling of protesters throwing makeshift bombs at the mayor’s residence last Saturday (March 7th).
“Their careers as police officers started just like yours, walking into the police academy, completing training, and raising their hands to take the oath. Years later, they were sent to busy streets to fulfill that pledge,” Tysch said. “They are both fathers, with children waiting for them to come home after their shifts. But at that moment, just like generations of police officers before them, they chose to step forward and protect those around them. Now, this mission falls to all of you.”
Mayor Mammadani also commended the two officers in a previous press conference: “Running towards danger so that others can safely evacuate.”
At the ceremony welcoming the new police recruits, the mayor expressed respect and gratitude for the police force.
“In the darkest moments for New Yorkers, they will look to you. You are able to do all this because you carry a mission and are dedicated to the people of this city,” Mammadani said. “Thank you for all that you have done and all that you are about to embark on. On behalf of all residents of the five boroughs of New York City, I congratulate you!”
