Last Saturday, on March 7th, US President Trump (Trump) concluded the “Shield of the Americas” summit in Miami and immediately boarded Air Force One to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to welcome the return of the remains of six fallen US soldiers.
At around 1:30 p.m. local time, Trump arrived at the base with First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President Vance and his wife, and Cabinet officials including War Secretary Pete Hegseth, to meet with Gold Star Families, families of US soldiers who have lost relatives in wars or military operations, and participate in the “Dignified Transfer.”
In the chilly wind, everyone stood solemnly as they watched the flag-draped coffins being slowly carried out of the C-17 transport plane by honor guards wearing white gloves. These were the first group of fallen American soldiers to return home since the “Operation Epic Fury” targeting Iran began a week ago.
The “Dignified Transfer” refers to the solemn movement of transfer cases covered with the American flag from the aircraft to transport vehicles by a uniformed military carry team. According to US military regulations, this is defined as a “transfer process” rather than a formal “ceremony,” aimed at ensuring the highest level of respect for the fallen soldiers upon their arrival on US soil.
These six fallen soldiers were all members of the Army Reserve’s 103rd Combat Logistics Command based in Iowa. They tragically lost their lives on March 1 in a drone attack by Iran at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait. The War Department has confirmed the identities of these six heroes:
– Jeffrey R. O’Brien: Major, 45 years old, from Iowa;
– Robert M. Marzan: Warrant Officer, 54 years old, from California;
– Cody A. Khork: Captain, 35 years old, from Florida;
– Nicole M. Amor: Sergeant First Class, 39 years old, from Minnesota;
– Noah L. Tietjens: Sergeant First Class, 42 years old, from Nebraska;
– Declan J. Coady: Corporal, 20 years old, from Iowa.
Earlier in the day at the “Shield of the Americas” summit held at Doral Resort in Florida, Trump briefed Latin American leaders on the latest developments in the “Operation Epic Fury.” He described these soldiers as “great national heroes” and expressed heartfelt condolences to their families.
Trump admitted, “This is a very sad situation in the war, and their way of coming home is different from what was expected.” He emphasized to War Secretary Hegseth that the government’s top priority is to “minimize” US military casualties.
At the summit, Trump announced that the US military had “destroyed 42 Iranian naval vessels” within just three days and had completely crippled their air force and telecommunications systems. He emphasized that this military operation was a “service” to the world, and specifically revealed that if the US military had not executed the “Operation Midnight Hammer” last summer, deploying B-2 bombers to precisely strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iran would have had nuclear weapons eight months earlier.
Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that due to its “malicious behavior,” the US military is considering further strikes on specific areas that were not previously targeted.
