New York renowned radio host Sid Rosenberg has recently sparked controversy on social media by insulting Mayor Mamdani over his attitude towards the US’s strike on Iran. After facing criticism from various parties, Rosenberg apologized to the Mayor on Wednesday (March 4th), admitting that his remarks were “a bit over the line”.
Rosenberg is the host of the WABC radio program “The Sid and Friends Morning Show” in New York. Earlier this week, he described Mamdani as a “radical” and “hateful towards America, hateful towards Jews” “Islamic cockroach” and referred to him as a “jihadist” in a social media post, using strong language.
On Wednesday (March 4th), Rosenberg released a video on his radio show, apologizing to Mamdani and acknowledging that his comments were indeed inappropriate.
“I shouldn’t address others in a derogatory manner,” Rosenberg said. “I have apologized to the Mayor, and it was sincere.”
However, a spokesperson for the New York City Hall stated that Rosenberg did not directly contact the Mayor. Mamdani responded on the same day, saying, “The sincerity of his apology remains to be seen over time.”
Rosenberg’s remarks have sparked widespread criticism over the past few days. Several political figures, including New York Governor Hochul, Senator Schumer, City Council Speaker Manning, and Police Commissioner Teixeira, publicly condemned the statements.
Rosenberg explained that his anger arose after Mamdani criticized the US military strikes on Iran. The Mayor had described the action as “a disastrous escalation of an illegal act of aggression”. On Wednesday, Rosenberg admitted, “I did channel my anger towards the Mayor.”
Mamdani pointed out that the controversy is not only about him personally but also affects “over a million Muslim residents living in New York City.” Mamdani is the first Muslim Mayor in New York City’s history.
WABC radio’s CEO John Catsimatidis also issued a statement on Wednesday, stating that while the station supports freedom of discussion, it will not tolerate personal attacks.
Nevertheless, Rosenberg stated on his show that he will continue to criticize the Mayor’s policies.
