Hudson Yards Landmark Vessel Reopens on March 9 after Turbulent Times

Located in Hudson Yards, the iconic architectural structure known as the “Vessel,” a honeycomb-shaped vertical staircase, is set to reopen to the public on March 9th after years of controversy and multiple closures.

The return of the Vessel is not simply a restart. Over the past few years, the facility has faced several tragic incidents leading to its closure, sparking widespread discussions on public space safety. Subsequently, the management has made structural improvements, including raising protective railings and adding safety measures such as protective nets. The reopening in late 2024, in a “partial open” format, marked a step towards a more comprehensive return, aiming to strike a new balance between public accessibility and safety assurance.

Designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick, the Vessel features a honeycomb-shaped three-dimensional structure comprising 154 flights of stairs, approximately 2,500 steps, and 80 observation platforms. The design philosophy emphasizes a “walkable sculpture,” encouraging visitors to move between the intertwining ascending stairs to view the cityscape from varying heights and angles continuously.

Since its opening, this building has received mixed reviews. Supporters hail it as one of New York’s most visually striking contemporary landmarks, while critics question its high cost and ostentatious style. Regardless of one’s stance, it undeniably has become a central symbol of the Hudson Yards public plaza, drawing millions of visitors and sparking numerous discussions and shares on social media.

The copper-colored geometric structure, towering up to 150 feet, has been one of New York’s most talked-about contemporary landmarks since its completion in 2019. The park management announced that starting March 9th, the Vessel will welcome visitors daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with tickets available for online booking. New York City residents can reserve free entry slots every Thursday with valid identification and have the chance to obtain a limited number of free tickets for the same day.
