California Newport Beach mansion suspicious, FBI hazardous materials investigator investigates

In a closed community in Irvine, California, suspicious items were reported to have been found in a residential home, leading to an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and a hazardous materials response team on February 26th. Local and federal authorities have been tight-lipped about the findings inside the house, but bomb squads and federal agents specializing in weapons of mass destruction have been dispatched.

The Irvine Police Department stated that on the 23rd, the landlord reported suspicious circumstances at a residence located in the upscale Altair community near Cartwheel Street and Iluna Street.

Firefighters were also on the scene to assist with the investigation. Irvine police said that the items found at the scene “require further investigation,” without providing specific details; officials mentioned that the Orange County Fire Authority had requested the FBI to take over the case. Laura Eimiller, a spokesperson for the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, stated that a hazardous materials response team has been dispatched to the residence.

“The FBI will continue to work together with the Irvine Police Department, the Orange County Fire Authority, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on this matter,” said FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller to the Epoch Times. “There is currently no known public safety threat.”

Eimiller mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, and the FBI is unable to provide further information at this time. Law enforcement has not issued any evacuation orders.

According to information provided on the FBI’s official website, their Evidence Response Team and Hazardous Evidence Response Team are usually deployed in cases involving dangerous crimes, including those related to terrorism and explosives. In a social media post in 2020, the FBI stated, “The Hazardous Evidence Response Team (HERT) specializes in incidents involving weapons of mass destruction and chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) materials. HERT members are experts in collecting hazardous evidence, managing crime scenes, and handling forensic evidence at CBRN crime scenes.”

On the 25th, FBI personnel were seen entering the residence’s garage wearing protective gear, boots, and respirators. Bomb squads were also dispatched to the scene during the initial investigation.

This million-dollar, four-bedroom residence is located across from a high school, adjacent to a park. According to Zillow data, the last time this residence was listed for rent was in 2021, with a monthly rent of $7,500. The community, even in affluent Irvine, is considered upscale and features 24/7 security, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and other amenities.

If the residence is confirmed to be a home-based chemical laboratory, it would be another recent case of the FBI investigating residential biolabs. In January of this year, federal authorities raided a residence in Las Vegas and found evidence of a suspected biolab inside. Over 1,000 sample vials are currently being tested to determine the nature of what was found in the residence.
