In Ohio, USA, a janitor got the surprise of his life while handling garbage when he discovered a suspect hiding in a trash bin. As the suspect attempted to flee after climbing out of the bin, a police officer at the scene rushed over and apprehended the culprit.
This incident took place on February 23 in Huber Heights, Ohio. The local police department shared on Facebook that earlier that day, the suspect had abandoned his car and fled during a roadside check. The authorities temporarily lost track of the suspect, leading them to set up a perimeter and initiate a search operation.
A video footage captured by a police car dashcam shows a janitor parking the garbage truck at the roadside. As he pushed the trash bin towards the truck and lifted the lid, he suddenly noticed a man hiding inside. He staggered back and, when the police car approached, he pointed towards the bin to signal that there was someone inside.

In the video, the man emerged from the trash bin and made a run for it. At that moment, a police officer from the car sprinted towards him, giving chase. During the pursuit, the man’s shoes appeared to have been flung off, and he turned out to be the suspect who had fled from authorities earlier during the inspection.
The police confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and detained, without any reported injuries.
Commending Officer Perez for his outstanding athleticism and quick response in apprehending the suspect, the police shared on Facebook, “Thanks to the remarkable physical abilities and swift reaction of our officer Perez, the suspect was safely captured.”
In a separate incident in Jackson, Alabama, a homeless man found himself in a similar situation of hiding in a trash bin, although the circumstances were entirely different.
According to the New York Post, the homeless man sought shelter from the cold by sleeping inside a large roadside garbage bin, only to be inadvertently dumped into a garbage truck along with the trash during the early hours of the morning. The temperature had plummeted to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately -6 degrees Celsius) at the time.
Fire department officials revealed that the garbage truck had undergone two automated “compaction cycles” en route to the next stop, squeezing the garbage and the homeless man tightly inside. When he woke up, he found himself in the rear compartment of the compaction chamber.
Fortunately, as the garbage truck driver made a breakfast pit stop at a fast-food chain during the collection route, he unexpectedly heard the homeless man’s cries for help from the rear of the vehicle. This prompted him to immediately cut off all power and alert the authorities.
Remarkably, the man was rescued unharmed, leaving even seasoned firefighters in awe. Jackson Fire Chief John Brown, with 40 years of service in the fire service, expressed his disbelief at the unprecedented scenario.
Volunteer firefighter Mendy Boldin, who responded to the scene, remarked, “We were all shocked because we were thinking we’d have to do a little extrication to get him out…he was fine. It’s definitely a miracle.”
The man was subsequently taken to the hospital for evaluation.
In a previous report by Dajiyuan, a similar incident occurred in Worcester, Massachusetts last year, where an individual fell asleep in a trash bin and narrowly escaped being taken away in a garbage truck, fortunately without any serious harm.
