A powerful bomb cyclone has been sweeping across the East Coast of the United States since Sunday, February 22nd, causing devastating snowfall and near-hurricane force winds along the densely populated corridor from Washington, D.C. to New England. This rapidly intensifying northeast storm has led to widespread transportation disruptions and multiple states declaring states of emergency. As of now, millions of people across the country remain under high wind and blizzard warnings.
Meteorologists state that the Northeastern United States is facing the strongest snowstorm in a decade, with some areas in the New York metropolitan region accumulating over 2 feet (60 centimeters) of snow, breaking historical records in certain locations.
According to data from a U.S. power outage tracking website, as of Monday night Eastern Time, over 450,000 customers are still without power nationwide. Furthermore, the latest data from a U.S. flight tracking website shows that just on Monday, over 5,600 flights in and out of the U.S. were canceled, with nearly 2,500 flights experiencing delays. Airports in New York, New Jersey, and Boston are experiencing the most severe flight cancellations.
The meteorological department mentioned that as the storm center gradually moves northward, its impact is starting to diminish. However, they are closely monitoring another storm that could bring additional snowfall to the region later this week.
