On February 21, 2026, a new account certified as an “original musician” quietly went online on the short video platform Douyin, and the person behind it was the singer Qu Wan Ting, who has been living overseas for a long time. This time, she not only posted videos of her playing and singing, with the IP address showing Jiangsu, but also quickly opened a storefront for merchandise.
After the account was opened, the number of fans surpassed 10,000 in just a few hours. However, it instantly sparked public anger. Because Qu Wan Ting had disabled the comment function on this account, angry netizens turned to expressing strong resistance through reposting and complaints. Internet users pointed out that her mother, Zhang Mingjie, was sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption, bribery, and abuse of power.
Facing overwhelming public opinion pressure, on February 22, when the account had been alive for less than 24 hours, all its information, videos, and storefront for merchandise had been swiftly cleared out.
This aborted comeback has once again turned the pages of the old account from years ago. On November 17, 2021, Zhang Mingjie, former director of the Office of the Leading Group for Urbanization Construction in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery.
Zhang Mingjie was accused of using his position during his tenure as Deputy District Mayor and leader of the District Reform Leading Group in Daoli District of Harbin City from 2009 to 2011, in the process of the merger of the state-owned enterprise Harbin Original Breeding Farm, as well as in the acquisitions of Harbin-Qiqi Railway Passenger Line Project Leading Group Office, Harbin Land Reserve Center Urban Construction Investment Group Co., Ltd., and acquisition and storage of part of the land of Harbin Original Breeding Farm. He was found to have engaged in favoritism, embezzlement, and abuse of power, resulting in a total public property loss of over 2.3259 billion yuan.
In addition, from November 2011 to July 2012, after seeking benefits for the merging unit, Zhang Mingjie first demanded 5 million yuan from the actual controller of the unit in the name of a loan, and later, along with Wang Shaoyu, demanded 50% of the shares of the unit involving the land of Harbin Original Breeding Farm, equivalent to over 93.17 million yuan.
Zhang Mingjie’s daughter, Qu Wan Ting, rose to fame with her song “My Heart Is Calling.”
Over the years, as the direct beneficiary of her mother’s corruption case, Qu Wan Ting has been living in Canada, where she has repeatedly voiced support for her mother from afar, emphasizing her belief in justice.
Most mainland Chinese netizens believe that Qu Wan Ting has never publicly apologized to the victims, nor has she returned any of the ill-gotten gains.
However, Weibo user “星無完美” (Imperfect Star) pointed out that Qu Wan Ting and her mother are currently separate individuals, so why should they be implicated together?
