On February 22nd, which coincided with the sixth day of the first lunar month in the traditional Chinese calendar known as “Ma Ri” (Horse Day), the Chinese-American Community Center in Bensonhurst, New York, united with several elected officials and over 50 Chinese and diverse ethnic community organizations to hold the “Year of the Horse Parade.” This event aimed to showcase community unity and cultural heritage through action, despite the inclement weather conditions.
Despite the weather forecast predicting a strong northeasterly storm in New York City, the event proceeded amidst rain and cold temperatures. Nevertheless, a large number of community leaders and individuals braved the elements to participate in the parade. After singing the American national anthem together, the procession began along 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst, stretching from 65th Street to 84th Street, advancing through the rain.
According to the head of the Chinese-American Community Center, Luo Tianfu, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the event. “The horse symbolizes independence, bravery, and success,” he emphasized the purpose of holding the ceremony and parade is to preserve cultural traditions and pass them down through the generations, allowing community members to exchange blessings and build consensus.
State Senator Chen Xueli remarked that the high turnout despite the adverse weather conditions demonstrated the deep integration and cohesion within the community. He expressed special gratitude to law enforcement, nonprofit organizations, and individuals from all walks of life for coming together to make the event possible. He noted that such a united scene showcases the strength and neighborly bond within the Asian community.
State Assemblyman Zheng Yongjia presented commendations to the organizers, acknowledging their efforts in promoting culture and fostering community exchanges. State Assemblyman William Colton mentioned that despite the unfavorable weather, the size of the parade has been expanding annually, symbolizing that the voice of the community is increasingly being heard. He also thanked law enforcement for maintaining public safety and wished everyone a prosperous New Year. Councilwoman Zhuang Wenyi stated her commitment to promoting legislation and allocating resources to improve community services and systems.
Other attendees at the event included representatives of Speaker Manning, New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice Lilian Wan, local leaders Tang Fengqiao, Xie Xiaoqiong, He Lining, and representatives from various community organizations such as the Bensonhurst Bay Parkway Chamber of Commerce, Cypress Hills Community Service Center, UA3, and elderly service organizations.
