Jiangxi man denied access to deceased father’s 150,000 yuan savings, attracting attention

On February 5th, a man in Pengze County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, went to the bank to withdraw the 150,000 yuan left by his deceased father, only to be rejected by the bank, sparking attention from netizens.

In a video posted by the man, he brought his passbook, his father’s cremation certificate, and his personal identification card to the Mianchuan Branch of Pengze Rural Commercial Bank Co., Ltd., expecting to withdraw the money smoothly. However, he was surprised when the bank refused him, demanding that he prove the father-son relationship and provide an inheritance notarization certificate since the deposit amount exceeded 50,000 yuan.

According to reports from Dafeng News and Benliu News, Mr. Wu, the individual involved, stated that his father passed away on February 2nd, leaving behind a deposit of 150,000 yuan at the Pengze Rural Commercial Bank. The money was divided into five certificates, with one 20,000 yuan deposit already expired but still inaccessible.

Mr. Wu expressed that his father’s body was still at the funeral home, waiting for this money to be used for the burial. “The bank asked us to notarize that my dad is my dad, or else we cannot prove our father-son relationship. It’s ridiculous.”

In response, the staff at the Mianchuan Branch of Pengze Rural Commercial Bank explained that for small inheritances under 50,000 yuan, depositors only need to provide a death certificate, identification proof, proof of relationship, etc., but for withdrawals exceeding 50,000 yuan, an inheritance notarization certificate is required as per regulatory requirements.

The incident has received widespread attention online, with many netizens criticizing, “Is there any justice left in this world? Can’t even prove the father-son relationship with a passbook?” and “Losing a loved one is already painful, now facing all these verification difficulties.”

However, some netizens commented, “The necessity of notarization is to prove the sole inheritor. The passbook only proves you are one of them, not the only one. What if other inheritors dispute it if money is distributed casually?” and “Then just withdraw below 50,000 yuan.”
