The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “TODAY” anchor Savannah Guthrie, remains unsolved as authorities continue to investigate possible ransom letters. Nancy Guthrie, 84 years old, stands at 5 feet 5 inches (approximately 165 centimeters) and weighs 150 pounds (about 68 kilograms) with brown hair and blue eyes. Despite her age and physical condition, police believe she is mentally clear and alert, ruling out a connection to dementia.
This case of mysterious disappearance unfolded as follows:
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that on Saturday night around 9:30 to 9:45 PM, relatives dropped Nancy Guthrie off at her residence for what would be the last time they saw her there. Her residence is located near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue in northern Tucson.
On Sunday around 11 AM, a fellow churchgoer contacted Nancy’s relatives to report her absence from church service. Her relatives then searched her residence and reported her missing to the authorities around noon.
Investigators speculate that Nancy Guthrie was abducted in the early hours of Sunday while she was sleeping. The exact time she was taken remains unclear.
Sheriff Nanos emphasized that Nancy Guthrie requires timely medication, and her life could be at risk if she does not receive it within 24 hours.
Despite efforts from volunteers, law enforcement, and various agencies, the search for Nancy Guthrie has yielded no results. Sheriff Nanos admitted, “We don’t know where she is; we have almost exhausted all our resources.”
At a press conference on Monday, Sheriff Nanos asserted that Nancy Guthrie did not leave voluntarily, stating, “That much is clear.”
Sheriff Nanos appealed to the community for assistance in the investigation, citing past successes in cracking difficult cases with community support. He urged, “If you hear or see anything, please contact us. We do not want to see any tragedy unfold.”
Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie, who is currently in Arizona, took to social media on Monday. In an Instagram post, she expressed her faith in God and the power of prayer. She wrote, “We believe in the power of prayer, in collective prayer, in love, in hope, in good, in humanity, most importantly, in Him.”
The post included a photo with the caption “Please Pray.”
Savannah continued, “Thank you for joining us in praying for my beloved mother Nancy. She is a steadfast, kind, loyal servant of the Lord. Please pray with us and believe that these prayers will bring her comfort.” She added, “We need you.”
On Tuesday, Sheriff Nanos faced the media again but did not provide substantial new information. He confirmed that Nancy Guthrie remains missing, and the motive behind the possible abduction is still unclear.
However, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that investigators are examining potential ransom letters and conducting an inquiry into them.
As of Wednesday, no specific suspects have been identified by law enforcement.
Authorities urge anyone with pertinent information to call 911 or contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
