The death toll in the Jiangsu Xiangshuiyu Bridge collapse accident rises to 5 people.

On February 2nd, the under-construction Xiangshui Moon Port Bridge in Yancheng, Jiangsu suddenly collapsed, causing the death toll to rise to 5.

According to the report from Xiangshui County in Yancheng on February 3rd, at 17:46 on the 2nd, the Moon Port Bridge of the Lianshen Line, constructed by China Railway 12th Bureau, collapsed during the construction process due to the fall of the tie rod arch beam. The accident initially resulted in 2 seriously injured individuals and 3 missing persons.

The latest official information from Yancheng states that the bodies of the 3 missing persons have been found, and the accident has led to a total of 5 fatalities. The current search and rescue operation has largely concluded.

The Moon Port Bridge is located in Yuangang Village, Xiangshui County. Due to it not meeting navigation requirements, it was requested to be demolished and reconstructed. Local transportation authorities had previously stated that they were aiming for completion and opening to traffic by September 2026, but the collapse occurred during the construction process.

According to reports from Shangguan News, a few minutes after the collapse of the Moon Port Bridge, Lv Conglin (a pseudonym) who runs a supermarket in Xiaojian Town, 6 kilometers away, saw a video of the scene on Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok).

“This is not a small bridge, there were at least dozens of people working on it,” Lv Conglin said. About a dozen minutes later, he drove to the edge of the Tongyu River and saw that the original structure of the bridge had been completely destroyed. Only the remnants of the approach bridge remained on the river bank, with the cranes on both sides overturned in the river, and some steel pipes protruding from the river where the collapsed bridge deck was. “It was a scene of devastation, like a collapsed building.”

Lv Conglin stated that on the day of the accident, he heard from people around him that many individuals had fallen into the river, but by the time he arrived, they had already been taken away by cars.

On the afternoon of February 3rd, he wanted to revisit the Moon Port Bridge but found the area sealed off, unable to even access the small roads. North of the Moon Port Bridge, the Zhouji Bridge, which is part of the same project, has also ceased construction, with only two tile workers doing odd jobs.
