Trump Meeting with Colombian President at the White House

On Tuesday, February 3rd, Colombian President Gustavo Petro arrived at the White House to meet with U.S. President Trump. This marked the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders after months of intense verbal clashes.

It is expected that during the meeting at the White House, key topics such as the Venezuela issue, drug trafficking, oil, security, and the U.S. efforts to combat drug trafficking vessels will be discussed.

Despite the U.S. military action in Venezuela on January 3rd and the subsequent arrest of Venezuelan President Maduro, Trump and Petro had a positive telephone conversation following the events. This unexpected phone call led to Petro being invited to visit Washington.

The relationship between Trump and Petro has become particularly tense due to the drug issue. Trump has criticized Colombia, stating that drug production has become its largest industry, while Petro has seemingly ignored these allegations. In October last year, Trump announced that Colombia would no longer receive aid from the United States or any other form of support. He argued that Colombia’s large-scale drug production is aimed at trafficking drugs to the U.S., causing death, destruction, and chaos.

The meeting on Tuesday will test whether the two leaders can achieve a lasting thaw in their relationship amidst ideological conflicts. President Trump told the media on Monday that Petro’s recent tone has shifted, suggesting that the Colombian President has become more compliant after the capture of Maduro by the U.S.

“We will have a pleasant meeting,” Trump optimistically stated.

According to Reuters, three sources revealed that Colombian officials plan to detail their major achievements in drug enforcement during the meeting on Tuesday, including cocaine seizures.

Will Freeman, a Latin America researcher at the Foreign Relations Committee, expressed that if President Petro focuses solely on drug-related issues rather than broader ideological differences, the meeting may progress smoothly.

Analysts have warned that if the two leaders fail to reach a more enduring reconciliation, it could have profound implications for regional security.
