On Sunday, February 1st, a shooting incident occurred at a hotel in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, resulting in the death of one officer and serious injuries to another officer.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, two officers were dispatched to a hotel located approximately 25 miles northeast of Atlanta near Stone Mountain.
Fox5 reported that Gwinnett County Police Chief JD McClure stated that the officers were sent in response to a call reporting a fraudulent booking at the hotel. Officers Pradeep Tamang and David Reed arrived at the hotel room, where they encountered Kevin Andrews, the occupant of the room, who was identified.
During the conversation, the 35-year-old Andrews pulled out a gun and opened fire. The officers immediately returned fire. Officer Tamang was fatally shot on the spot, while officer Reed sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is in serious condition.
The suspect, Andrews, was also injured but the wounds were non-life-threatening.
Authorities reported that the injured officers were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition but currently stable. The suspect is also receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. There were no other reports of injuries among individuals present.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on Sunday, stating, “Today, we mourn with the Gwinnett County Police Department for the brave officer who lost their life in the line of duty and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured officer.”
“This incident serves as a reminder that law enforcement officers face danger every day, and we are grateful for every officer who puts themselves in harm’s way to protect the people of Georgia,” Kemp posted on the social media platform X.
Chief McClure disclosed that Andrews had a criminal record involving violence, firearms, and drugs. He was wanted for violent crimes committed in DeKalb County.
The investigation of this case has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically handles shooting incidents involving officers in Georgia.
