During the May 1st holiday in China this year, disasters have struck frequently. On May 2nd, a rockfall occurred at the Hengshan Scenic Area in Shanxi, resulting in 1 death and 5 injuries. The day before, a landslide on the Chaoyang section of the Meida Expressway in Guangdong had already claimed the lives of 48 people, with DNA confirmation ongoing for 3 more victims, while 30 others were injured.

At around 3:05 pm on May 2nd, a rockfall took place at the Tiger Wind Pass in the Hengshan Scenic Area in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, leaving 6 tourists injured. Among them, one suffered severe injuries and unfortunately passed away despite rescue efforts, while the remaining 5 injured individuals are currently stable and under observation and treatment at the hospital.

Reports from Red Star News revealed that tourists were indeed injured by falling rocks inside the scenic area, as confirmed by staff members on the same day. According to accounts from some tourists, the incident occurred before they reached the mountain peak, with several people already injured. The scenic area promptly halted visitors from ascending the mountain and instructed those on the mountain to come down.

One tourist disclosed that they began descending around 4 pm and witnessed two ambulances entering the scenic area to transport the injured individuals down the mountain.

A netizen named “Yingwen Fei Laoshu” who was present at the scene posted on social media, saying: “I narrowly escaped danger this time. I had just come down the mountain when the rockfall happened right after. Fortunately, I left early in the morning, went up early, and came down early. It was only during the evening that the rockfall occurred. It’s truly frightening.”

Hengshan is located in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, and is known as the Northern Peak of the Five Sacred Mountains. It is a national dual heritage site of nature and culture, as well as a national 4A-level tourist area.
