【Update】2025 US Election Day Voter Guide

On Tuesday, November 4th, the US election day took place across various locations in the United States, including New York, Virginia, New Jersey, and California, where voters turned out to cast their votes.

This election will reflect the American people’s views on President Trump’s performance during his second term and their opinions on the Democratic Party. Some lawmakers hope that Election Day on Tuesday could be a key step towards reopening the government.

Over half of the states held elections on Tuesday, with notable contests such as the New York City mayor, governors of New Jersey and Virginia, Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices, and the redistricting of congressional districts in California.

New York City polling stations opened at 6:00 am local time and will remain open until 9:00 pm for voters.

Polling stations in Virginia and New Jersey also opened at 6:00 am local time. Voting in Virginia will end at 7:00 pm, while voting in New Jersey will end at 8:00 pm.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast in California, polling stations opened at 7:00 am and will close at 8:00 pm local time.

In Pennsylvania, polls opened at 7:00 am and will close at 8:00 pm local time.

The Board of Elections of New York City (BOENYC) announced at noon that over 1.1 million people voted in the New York City 2025 election.

The head of the polling station in Sheep’s Head Bay told Dajiyuan that people were already lining up outside at 6 am, with significantly more voters compared to the mayoral election four years ago in 2021, and people of all age groups were present.

She mentioned that this year, many young people and even elderly individuals who had not registered as voters yet came out to vote.

In Chester County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, there were reports of independent and third-party voters missing from the voter rolls at polling stations.

Local media 6ABC reported that independent and third-party voters in Chester County were informed that their names were not on the voter rolls, affecting the entire county, and the issue remains unresolved.

The Chester County Voter Services Department stated that they are working to expedite the delivery of supplemental voter rolls to all 230 polling stations. In the meantime, independent and third-party voters can cast provisional ballots.

Furthermore, the Voter Services Department in the county mentioned that they will conduct a formal review to determine the cause of the issue and ensure such incidents do not occur again.

Chester County has over 75,000 independent and third-party voters, accounting for over 19% of all registered voters.

The focus of Pennsylvania’s election includes the Philadelphia district attorney, state Supreme Court justices, and Philadelphia city auditor.

New York City, the largest city in the U.S., held a highly anticipated mayoral election between socialist Democratic State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, independent candidate and former Democratic State Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

34-year-old Mamdani easily defeated Cuomo in the party primary in June, exciting the left-wing faction within the Democratic Party while causing concerns among the moderate wing.

Former President Trump endorsed Cuomo across party lines the day before the election, urging Republican voters not to vote for the party’s candidate, as it would be equivalent to splitting votes and benefitting Mamdani.

Moreover, the New Jersey governor’s election is also hotly contested. Polls show that Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill is ahead of Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. However, Ciattarelli had a narrow gap of about 3 percentage points with current Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in 2021.

Referendum: California voters will vote on Proposition 50, a new congressional district redistricting plan. The proposal could potentially shift up to five Republican-held seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to Democratic control.

The bill was introduced by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom in response to the new redistricting plan passed by the Republican Party in Texas in August. Several states are introducing increasingly intense redistricting proposals.

Maine voters will cast their votes on statewide issues and a “red flag” law aimed at preventing gun violence. Texas has 17 referendum items, including constitutional amendments concerning parental rights and limiting voting rights to U.S. citizens only. Colorado and Washington also have statewide referendum proposals.

Pennsylvania will vote to determine the composition of the state Supreme Court, with three judges up for re-election. Currently, the court has five Democratic judges and two Republican judges.

The party control of the court could have a significant impact on the 2028 presidential election, as judges may be called upon to rule on election disputes. Both parties are investing heavily in judicial elections.

Notable mayoral elections include Detroit, Pittsburgh, Jersey City, and Buffalo electing new mayors, while incumbents in Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati are seeking re-election.
