Chicago Sunday Shooting Spree Leaves Six Dead

Chicago City is plagued by rampant violent crimes. On January 18th (Sunday), multiple shooting incidents occurred from early morning until night, with at least ten individuals found shot, six of whom tragically lost their lives, while several others suffered serious injuries.

Chicago witnessed several shooting incidents on the past Sunday, starting as early as around two in the morning and as late as past nine in the evening. Victims included those gunned down in their homes by intruders and shot inside their vehicles. The youngest victim was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the back and is in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The first shooting incident on January 18th occurred at 2:03 am inside a residence in the 1100 block of North Lawler Avenue in Chicago, where two men shot at the residence, resulting in a 23-year-old female being shot in the arm and rushed to Stroger Hospital of Cook County for treatment. CBS News reported that the female victim sustained serious injuries.

Here are several other typical cases from that day:

At 4:46 am, a 40-year-old man was shot multiple times by unidentified individuals from behind a door while inside a residence in the 1800 block of South Springfield Avenue. He was pronounced dead after being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

In the early hours, a man and a woman were found shot dead at different locations. The woman had multiple gunshot wounds.

At 10:19 am, a 37-year-old man was shot in his home in the Garfield Park community near the intersection of West Warren Boulevard and North Albany Avenue. The victim was hit by three gunshots, taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and ultimately declared dead.

At 6:30 pm, a 19-year-old man was driving on the 5800 block of West Walton Street when another man approached and shot at him multiple times. The victim was hit in the hand and leg, causing his vehicle to collide with a parked car before coming to a stop, and he was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The latest shooting incident on Sunday occurred at 9:38 pm, where a 17-year-old girl was shot in the back while inside a car in the 1800 block of North Latrobe Avenue. Authorities stated that the injured girl knows the shooter.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democratic Party member, has been serving as the 57th mayor of Chicago, Illinois since 2023.

While Chicago has long struggled with high crime rates, Johnson publicly stated in October last year, “Just this past summer, our homicide numbers were the lowest since 1965, making it the safest summer in 60 years.”

According to Fox News, Johnson’s remarks were in reference to a federal immigration enforcement operation led by Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, which he claimed disrupted what he called “one of the safest summers in decades.”

However, NPR affiliate WBEZ Chicago reported that from June to August last year, there were a total of 123 murders in Chicago.
