On the morning of January 14, 2026, from 7:30 to 9:00 am, Delaware State Representative Mara Gorman held the first voter coffee meeting of the year at Deer Park restaurant in Newark. She presented the latest updates on her work and answered questions from constituents. Gorman mentioned her limited use of social media, citing the prevalence of hate speech that makes her uncomfortable.
Representative Gorman emphasized her commitment to serving her community. She particularly highlighted the success of the Delaware Legislative Women’s Caucus meeting held on January 8. The caucus, comprised of bipartisan members from both chambers, focuses on empowering women in Delaware by amplifying their voices, creating opportunities, and ensuring economic security. The meeting delved into the complexities of housing instability, including issues such as domestic violence, affordability concerns, and their impact on homelessness among women and children in Delaware. Housing is closely tied to women’s economic security, safety, and family stability, with legislators exploring innovative solutions.
Lyn Henshaw, Chair of the Newark Area Welfare Committee (NAWC), also attended the meeting and expressed gratitude for Representative Gorman’s support. NAWC, a non-profit organization operated by dedicated volunteers for over 90 years, provides food relief and emergency assistance to Newark families – aiding with mortgage, rent, utility payments, and offering community services like shoe donations.
During the question-and-answer session, Representative Gorman mentioned her infrequent use of social media, including Facebook, due to the overwhelming negative comments that deeply affect her. As a legislator, she highlighted the dilemma she faces with public feedback on social media – either shutting it down entirely or keeping it open without the ability to delete comments. Gorman shared that some comments are so harsh that they disturb her, affecting her sleep at times. She stressed that while she welcomes differing perspectives and discussions, the current online environment is inundated with excessive hate speech.
Representative Gorman reminded everyone that the next meeting will be held on February 11 at 5:30 pm, where she will co-host with State Representative Cyndie Romer and Newcastle County Councilwoman Valerie George. Councilwoman George was also present at the meeting that day.
