Disney estimated that its animated sequel “Zootopia 2” will surpass $1 billion in global box office revenue on Friday, December 12, making it the second Hollywood film to achieve this milestone in 2025, following Disney’s other production, the live-action “Lilo & Stitch.”
According to a report on CNBC on Friday, as of Thursday, December 11, the film has already grossed $986.1 million worldwide, with $232.7 million in North America and $753.4 million in the international market.
Based on Disney’s data, “Zootopia 2” crossed the $1 billion mark in just 17 days, setting a new record for the fastest Hollywood animated film and all PG-rated films.
The film opened on Thanksgiving in North America, grossing $559.5 million in a five-day holiday period, breaking records for the highest opening for an animated film globally in 2025, the highest global premiere record, and the highest global opening for a Disney animated film.
Notably, the film performed strongly in the Chinese market. Despite China’s tightening quotas on U.S. films and threats of further restrictions due to escalating trade tensions, “Zootopia 2” set a record for the highest opening for a non-domestic animated film in China with $272 million and became the highest-grossing non-domestic animated film in Chinese box office history on its fifth day of release.
As of now, “Zootopia 2” has accumulated approximately $447.2 million in the Chinese box office, ranking second in Chinese box office history among MPA (Motion Picture Association of America) distributed films, following only “Avengers: Endgame.” Disney currently holds three of the top five spots in Chinese box office history among MPA films.
Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation Studios, said, “This milestone is significant for us. More importantly, it means audiences from around the world, from all walks of life, are returning to theaters to watch this film together on the big screen – it’s the dream come true for ‘Zootopia’.”
So far in 2025, only two films have surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, the other being the Chinese domestic animation “Ne Zha 2” with a total box office of $2.2 billion.
“Zootopia 2” also boosted the original 2016 film “Zootopia” to achieve the highest rewatch viewing figures in Disney+ history and together with the short film “Zootopia+”, the total global viewing time has exceeded 725 million hours.
The current box office rankings for “Zootopia 2” in other overseas markets are as follows: France ($29.6 million), South Korea ($28.5 million), Mexico ($20.9 million), Germany ($17.7 million), ranking second to fifth.
With the Christmas holiday approaching, the industry predicts that the box office for “Zootopia 2” will continue to rise, with its main competition at the year-end being “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
This film also marks the first time Disney Animation Studio has released $1 billion-level animated films two years in a row since “Moana 2” last year. Since 2013, the studio has had five films that have surpassed $1 billion, including “Frozen,” “Moana,” and the “Zootopia” series.
