After the military parade commemorating the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) promptly refuted Beijing’s “deliberate distortion” of documents from World War II, including the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the Treaty of San Francisco, in an attempt to justify its coercion of Taiwan. However, Beijing’s narrative is entirely mistaken because these documents did not determine the final political status of Taiwan.
The American Institute in Taiwan serves as the de facto embassy of the United States government in Taiwan. This statement signifies the first time in 50 years that the U.S. government has openly advocated for the “undetermined status of Taiwan.” So why is the United States speaking the truth at this moment? Is the sovereignty of Taiwan truly undetermined?
